India’s tourism image on the mend

Safety concerns that marred India’s tourism image in 2015 may now be a thing of the past for the country’s tour operators.

Indian inbound tourism recorded sluggish growth in 2015 after a number of crimes against international travellers, especially women, were widely reported in the global media.

“Our image took a beating at that time but now everything has settled as nothing untoward relating to the safety of an international tourist has happened in recent times. I don’t see it as any challenge for the growth of inbound tourism today,” said Arun Anand, managing director, Midtown Travel.

Further bolstering confidence, India’s Ministry of Tourism in February 2016 launched a 24/7 toll-free tourist infoline in 12 international languages to assist tourists visiting India, said Riyaz U C, managing director, Spiceland Holidays.

As well, SATTE 2017 witnessed the launch of India Assist, the country’s first mobile app that assists foreign travellers in times of distress. The app can connect international tourists to a call centre for assistance and provide the exact location of the caller.

The app founders are currently in talks with airlines and insurance companies to promote the service.

Harish Khatri, founder, India Assist, said: “Most foreign travellers take travel insurance before travelling, but that only covers a set of things like cancellation of trips, medical emergencies abroad and baggage loss. But what about situations related to safety or getting lost in the city? We are going to bridge this gap.”

However, a tour operator commented on the condition of anonymity: “Steps like a tourist helpline are superficial ways that serve little for the safety and security of a foreign tourist. What we need is dedicated tourist police in every state. We can’t afford any more negative reportage concerning tourist safety.”

SureStay Hotel Group, a white-label subsidiary of Best Western Hotels & Resorts, has secured its first location in Asia with the signing of SureStay Plus Sukhumvit Soi 2 in Bangkok.

A new-build, lower-midscale hotel, this Bangkok property is expected to open in December 2017 featuring 85 rooms and a business corner for corporate travellers, and as per SureStay standards, complimentary breakfast and in-room Wi-Fi.

Said Olivier Berrivin, Best Western’s managing director of international operations – Asia: “The signing of SureStay Plus Sukhumvit Soi 2 will lead to a significant roll-out of this exciting white-label concept in key business and leisure destinations across Asia in future.”

Hotel owners will be provided with a cloud-based PMS and a digital platform, on top of being offered advice on how to manage online reviews and social media platforms, as well as property-level sales coaching.

Introduced in late 2016, SureStay Hotel Group is a hotel family designed to allow economy and lower-midscale hotels to harness Best Western’s global network.

SureStay Hotel Group has more than 30 properties already approved, mainly in North America. By end 2017, the brand expects to expand its global portfolio to 100 hotels.

Netflix, Spotify get on board Qantas’ domestic flights

Qantas customers on Wi-Fi-enabled domestic flights will have free access to Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify content when the relevant technology becomes available on a first flight this month, before rolling out to the rest of the carrier’s domestic Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 fleet from mid-2017 onwards.

The Australian airline will offer video and audio streaming with speeds up to 10 times faster than conventional inflight Wi-Fi, made possible through the nbn Sky Muster satellite service. The technology uses idle data capacity, where signals reach the aircraft as it flies through the satellite’s 101 spot beams across Australia.

While Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify are all paid subscription services, they will offer free access to Qantas customers on and off the aircraft.

Specifically, Foxtel will offer three days’ free access to its Foxtel app every time a customer flies, allowing customers to stream live sports, news and TV shows as well as its full range of on-demand content. No sign-up to a subscription is required.

Netflix will give new customers access to the entire Netflix service as part of a 30-day free trial (sign-up required). Existing Netflix members only need to log in to continue watching at no extra charge.

Spotify will provide a 30-day free trial of its Premium music service, which has no ads, shuffle play and unlimited skips (sign-up required).

Customers log on to the Qantas inflight Wi-Fi via their own devices. On the landing page, they are presented with links to access Netflix, Spotify and Foxtel, as well as real-time flight data; hotel, restaurant and transport options at the destination; the latest weather; and personalised information linked to passenger itinerary and Frequent Flyer account.

Streaming of Sky News Australia will also be available.

In November 2016, Qantas installed ViaSat satellite-receiving equipment on its first Wi-Fi enabled Boeing 737. Hardware and software testing is underway on this aircraft, ahead of the service being launched.

Qantas is in talks with suppliers to extend Wi-Fi services to its international and regional (QantasLink) fleets to develop a product that can overcome technical, performance and coverage challenges, including options for Wi-Fi over large stretches over water.

Philippine Airlines’ Manila-KL route relaunch brings cheer to trade

Inbound and outbound agents in Malaysia are elated after Philippine Airlines (PAL) announced that it would reinstate its Manila-Kuala Lumpur services on June 8, three years after the suspension of this route due to poor performance.

PAL’s daily services will add to Malaysia Airlines’ and AirAsia’s current thrice-daily services on the sector.

Raaj Navaratnaa, general manager at New Asia Holidays Tours & Travel, said: “This will encourage extensions beyond Manila as PAL has a domestic network. This is good for our company as outbound travel to Philippines is the second largest market, after Singapore. Malaysians love the Philippines for its beaches and nature.”

In light of the new PAL flights, Arokia Das, senior manager of Luxury Tours Malaysia, plans to increase sales calls to Manila by 25 per cent this year and roll out more online marketing campaigns.

He added: “Business from the Philippines was flat for us last year, which is why we are putting more effort this year. The re-entry of Philippine Airlines means that the airline will also do its own marketing and promotions to sell Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia.”

According to Tourism Malaysia statistics, Malaysia received 348,271 tourists from the Philippines during the first 10 months of 2016, a 24.2 per cent drop from the corresponding period in 2015.

Sri Lanka Tourism has drawn up a series of initiatives to boost international tourist arrivals, including intensifying marketing efforts through digital platforms and travel programmes on global TV channels like CNN.

“We will introduce our short-term, digital-focused campaign in June that will last till end this year. Going forward, we will launch a global marketing campaign in 2018 focusing on the authenticity and diversity of Sri Lanka as a tourist destination. We are still deciding whether to introduce a new branding or not,” Sutheash Balasubramaniam, managing director of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB), told TTG Asia during an interview at SATTE 2017.

In the pipeline are plans to open offices in key source markets such as India, China, the UK, France and Germany, he revealed.

In 2017, Sri Lanka anticipates a respective growth of 20 per cent and 30 per cent from the 356,729 Indian arrivals and 271,577 Chinese arrivals recorded last year.

To reach out to these two Asian giants, SLTPB is also looking to host the annual conventions of travel agent associations from both markets. “Holding such events will help us to create awareness about the tourism offerings in Sri Lanka,” said Balasubramaniam.

The NTO is also eyeing the luxury segment from Japan, one of its top 10 source markets. Sri Lanka welcomed 43,110 Japanese tourists last year and projects a 15 per cent growth from this market in 2017.

“We are also looking at new markets in Europe like Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium for increasing tourist arrivals,” said Balasubramaniam.

Sri Lanka recorded two million international tourist arrivals in 2016 and expects a growth of 10-15 per cent in 2017.
