TFE Hotels orders asset evolution across Adina portfolio

TFE Hotels has announced a A$100 million (US$72.1 million) investment across its first-generation Adina Apartment Hotels, which will include the repositioning of some of its best-known properties.

The initiative will see guestrooms, public spaces and hotel amenities upgraded across key properties in Australia and Europe, with a focus on design, comfort and the apartment-style experience Adina is known for.

Adina Darling Harbour’s new Shoreline Kitchen

Adina Darling Harbour, a beneficiary of the investment, has completed extensive refurbishment, showing off upgraded guestrooms, revitalised public spaces, and the launch of Shoreline Kitchen.

Marking 26 years since its opening ahead of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the transformation positions Adina Darling Harbour for a new generation of travellers while staying true to the brand.

Adina Perth and Adina Town Hall in Sydney have also been transformed recently.

TFE Hotels’ CEO, Antony Ritch, said: “The Adina brand and experience are evolving as travellers increasingly look for hotels that can provide both the living experience with full hotel services and amenities.

“In addition to our owned hotels, we’re working closely with our third party hotel owners to elevate the guest experience by leaning into what makes Adina unique – generous liveable spaces, relaxed Australian hospitality, and an elevated design approach.”

According to Ritch, the Adina brand experience is also evolving with purpose.

“With new hotels opening in Brisbane, Hobart, Cambridge and Glasgow, the rollout of our new Adina brand activations, and the implementation of a digital Guest Experience Platform across the portfolio, we’re delivering a more connected, design-led and guest-centric experience,” he said.

“This next chapter reflects our commitment to invest in where traveller expectations are heading.”

Beyond Australia, refurbishment projects are also underway in Europe. Adina Budapest now sports modern design aesthetic, anchored by a natural earth-toned palette. Works on Adina Frankfurt Neue Oper in Frankfurt are in progress, and the result will be transformed apartments and public areas.

Moritz Klein, TFE’s head of operations for EU and the UK, shared that ESG principles are embedded throughout the design, ensuring sustainability through timeless quality and responsible sourcing.

F1 race in Malaysia sparks inbound interest

0

Malaysia’s Formula 1 race next month is generating inbound tourism business, with Malaysian operators reporting enquiries and bookings from markets ranging from the India subcontinent and the Middle East to Africa and South-east Asia.

The Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia will take place from October 2 to 4, marking F1’s return to Sepang International Circuit (SIC) after a nine-year absence. Malaysia last hosted an F1 race in 2017, after 19 consecutive Malaysian Grands Prix at Sepang since the circuit made its F1 debut in 1999.

Sepang International Circuit will witness the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in October

Arokia Das Anthony, executive director of Essence of Asia Tours & Travel, told TTG Asia that he had enquiries from overseas agent partners in India, Nigeria, Morocco, Ghana and Ivory Coast as soon as the Sepang race was announced.

“We have so far sold two tours from India, with the travellers extending their stay in Kuala Lumpur after the race and booking tour packages with us,” he said. “Should F1 become an annual fixture, which I hope it does, it would attract high-spending tourists willing to extend their stay in Malaysia after the race.”

Next month’s race in Malaysia is a one-off event, with the Bahrain Grand Prix relocated to Malaysia rather than the Malaysian Grand Prix being reinstated on the F1 calendar.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif has said Malaysia would need to spend at least RM300 million (US$73.7 million) annually to secure a permanent F1 slot, including hosting rights and local preparation costs.

U2 Travel & Tours is similarly packaging the event around accommodation and transfers to SIC, while also helping overseas agent partners purchase F1 tickets for their customers. Executive director K Jai Kishan said the company had received bookings from India, the Middle East, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia.

While some travellers are coming specifically for the sport, Jai Kishan said others, particularly from medium-haul and longhaul markets, are extending their trips. “South-east Asian visitors typically stay another night or two for sightseeing,” he said.

Separately, Amadeus Travel Intelligence data points to increased international travel activity around the period of the back-to-back F1 races in Malaysia and Singapore.

The top 10 origin markets for air arrivals into Malaysia during race week include Australia, India, the UK, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan.

The UK was the fastest-growing international source market for Kuala Lumpur, with arrivals up 49 per cent year-on-year, followed by Australia at 40 per cent and Singapore at 38 per cent.

Air travel from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore between October 5 and 11 is also up 74 per cent year-on-year, pointing to the potential for fans to combine the Malaysian and Singapore races.

Amadeus also found that short stays of one to five nights in Kuala Lumpur increased 17 per cent year-on-year during the race period, while medium and long stays declined 8 per cent. Meanwhile, Singapore is seeing a strong shift towards medium length stays, with trips of six to 13 nights up 49 per cent year- on- year, suggesting visitors are building longer holidays around the event rather than travelling solely for the race weekend.

Gold Coast Airport set on expanding direct international links as travel appetite surges

Gold Coast Airport is pushing for new international carriers to operate on its grounds

Securing new direct flight capacity with overseas markets represents a major goal for Gold Coast Airport, as it moves to capture rising travel demand that is driven by rapid population growth and an unprecedented local economic boom.

Gold Coast Airport recently added Qantas services to Auckland and Fiji Airways flights connecting through to North America.

Gold Coast Airport is pushing for new international carriers to operate on its grounds

“We’re targeting markets that have existing strong demand for travel in and out of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales regions,” Adam Rowe, chief of aviation at Queensland Airports, told TTG Asia.

“Our catchment is craving a hub connection that services not just the Asian region but also the UK and Europe.”

According to recent International Visitor Survey data, 28 per cent of international visitors to the Gold Coast arrive via Brisbane Airport, whereas 66 per cent fly directly into Gold Coast Airport on either domestic or international flights.

Rowe noted that traffic congestion on the drive down from Brisbane is resulting in a clear visitor preference for flying direct or transiting through domestic hubs like Sydney or Melbourne instead.

“We’re keen to strengthen our direct links as much as possible to ensure visitors are offered the best experience, with efficient transit through Gold Coast Airport offering substantially more time in destination,” Rowe explained, highlighting the seamless experience at Gold Coast where processing time from aircraft to landside can take under seven minutes.

Strong economic indicators are driving the push for expanded capacity. The region is seeing rapid population growth and leads Australia in construction activity – holding the nation’s highest ‘crane index’, which measures economic growth by counting the number of active building cranes in the skyline.

Upcoming developments include high-rise apartments and new luxury hotels such as Australia’s first Andaz, Ritz-Carlton, Marriott Luxury Collection, St Regis, and Westin.

To attract new international carriers, Gold Coast Airport works closely with local, state, and national tourism bodies, leveraging initiatives like the state’s Connecting Queensland Fund along with advocacy from Tourism Australia to incentivise airlines.

Addressing global supply chain issues and hub capacity constraints, Rowe stressed the importance of long-term sustainability over temporary market shifts. The strategy is already showing strong results, with the airport recording 25 per cent international growth in FY26.

“Hub capacity limits or supply chain constraints are temporal – we need to be able to see past that to seek and support the establishment of new capacity that captures existing market demand and stimulates additional travel,” Rowe added.
