Amsterdam Light Festival to shine on Thailand’s MICE sector

0

THAILAND Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has signed a partnership agreement with Amsterdam Light Festival to bring artworks from the renowned light show to Bangkok later this year.

In a statement from TCEB, the festival, to be held in Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong area, is done in hopes to invigorate the Thai economy, restore faith in Thailand as a safe destination, as well as to draw more event organisers to the country.

Nopparat Mathaveekulchai, director of TCEB, said: “We are focused on pooling in events from our bidding targets and increasing arrivals of international visitors by hosting international events and mega events.

“By positioning Thailand as Asia’s premier destination for international events within our strategic direction to drive Thailand as the hub of mega events, we are paving way for more arrivals of quality visitors and event-goers,” he said.

The light festival is expected to entice over one million international MICE delegates and to generate an estimated turnover of 106.7 billion baht (US$2.9 billion).

Flights cancelled, tourists evacuated as Mount Aso erupts

TRAVEL companies featuring Japan’s Mount Aso on their itineraries are swiftly rethinking their plans after the volcano rumbled violently to life on Monday, September 14.

Tourists were on the mountain when the first major eruption occurred at 09.43, with volcanic debris being launched from the crater and a pall of ash rising several kilometres into the air above the caldera.

Authorities quickly evacuated the mountain of tourists and staff of local businesses there, which includes those from a museum, cable car service and a number of souvenir shops.

The eruption has affected flights to and from Kumamoto Airport, which is roughly 20 km to the west of the peak of Mount Aso. So far, 20 flights have been cancelled and others diverted to other airports in the region in order to avoid the ash plume.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the alert level on the nation’s largest volcano to three on the five-point scale and issued warnings that the mountain should not be approached. There is danger of rocks ejected from the crater falling as far as two km from the peak, the agency said.

“In the coming week we were meant to have a group of 11 cyclists taking the road that crosses the mountain, but we will now take an alternative route,” Thomas Holvoet, founder of Japan Biking, told TTG Asia e-Daily.

Access restrictions were placed on some parts of the mountain a year ago, he added, after the first indications that an eruption might occur.

Llewelyn Thomas, managing director of Kyushu-based Walk Japan, said a group of hikers are scheduled to climb the mountain later this year.

“It is very possible that everything will have calmed down again by then, but we are contacting our clients to keep them informed of the situation and to let them know that we will be providing an alternative walk if the restrictions are still in place,” he said.

Local operators steer clear of ‘red shirt’ rally site in KL

0

WITH the ‘red shirt’ rally expected to go ahead in Kuala Lumpur’s Padang Merbok tomorrow, Malaysian inbound tour operators are avoiding tours in the area due to concerns over safety.

Coinciding with Malaysia Day tomorrow, the controversial rally is organised by Malay groups to counter the recent Bersih 4 rally, purportedly dominated by Chinese.

Several travel managers have reported cancellations from neighbouring countries.

Yap Sook Ling, managing director of Asian Overland Services Tours & Travel, said: “Our tours in Kuala Lumpur go on as usual but we will avoid the areas affected by the rally.”

Arokia Das, senior manager at Luxury Tours Malaysia, said his company has cancelled city tours in the daytime as “anything can happen, and depending on the situation tomorrow, we may schedule a night tour of Kuala Lumpur”.

According to Das, two student groups from Singapore have cancelled their trips for this coming weekend.

Raaj Navaratnaa, general manager of New Asia Holiday Tours & Travel in Johor, said: “We had a big meeting group of 600 pax from Singapore planning to have their meeting in Kuala Lumpur at the end of this month cancelled because of the rally. They are instead going to Thailand.

“Safety is paramount to tourists. I anticipate a much bigger drop in the coming weeks if the government does not control the crowd in tomorrow’s rally,” he said.

“Having this rally will change the perception of Malaysia as a multi-racial and harmonious country, which is what Malaysia has all this while been known for.”

Cathay Pacific adds new link between Hong Kong and Madrid

0

CATHAY Pacific Airways will begin a new route between Hong Kong and Madrid next year, becoming the second carrier after Air China to offer direct flights between Spain and China.

Set to begin on June 2, 2016, the four-times weekly service will be operated on a Boeing 777-300ER, departing on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Ivan Chu, CEO of Cathay Pacific, said the new route forms part of the company’s expansion plans in Europe, with services recently launched to Manchester, Zurich and Düsseldorf.

While a high percentage of business traffic is predicted for the Madrid route, the airline says the service will not only open up a new gateway for Chinese travellers visiting Spain but also for those flying onward to destinations in Latin America.

Currently, Spain has only one airline offering direct flights between the two countries. Air China flies five times a week to Madrid and three to Barcelona.

Welcoming the new route, Roberto Xu, director of Madrid-based Asia specialist operator, Viajes Extremo Oriente, said: “At the moment there are very few direct flights between Spain and China. (By) using Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific will provide a good link with the south of China, as well as countries like the Philippines.”

Philippines goes on the ascent as prime diving destination

0

THE Philippines is shaping up to be a major diving destination, according to sellers during the country’s first international Diving & Resort Travel (DRT) Expo.

Olivier Martinez, marketing director of Asiaqua, which owns a fleet of 12 dive ships, said their packages to the Tubbataha Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are already 85 per cent booked six months ahead.

Lauren Feather of international sales, Atmosphere Resorts & Spa in Dauin, Negros Oriental, observes growing interest in the Philippines in the US and other international dive shows. “The Philippines is the next big thing in diving,” she opined.

Christian Reinwald, owner of Easy Diving & Beach Resort in Sipalay, Negros Occidental, said the dive market is “alright” with 95 per cent of their European clients spending two to three weeks on diving safaris.

Asians, too, are being drawn due to proximity of the Philippines. Brisk demand from South Korean and Chinese divers has driven the Sea World Dive Centre in Boracay to expand and upgrade its facilities, said Hye Kyoung Jung, Professional Association of Diving Instructors course director at the centre.

Jung also acknowledges that the Philippine Department of Tourism did a good job in marketing and promoting diving in Philippines in recent years, adding that the special department for diving interests had managed to clinch the deal with Hong Kong-based LX Development Group to launch the DRT Expo in the Philippines.

Travel takes off among Vietnam’s emerging middle class

0

FOREIGN travel among Vietnamese have traditionally been reserved for the wealthy, but a growing middle class is bucking that trend, according to local and regional tour operators.

“The living standard in Vietnam is increasing day by day,” said Vu Tuan Tu, leader of marketing and communication for Vietravel, urging outbound operators to shift their attention to the country’s growing middle class.

Hoang Tich Hong Hai, accounts manager for SaigonTourist, agreed: “The main markets have to focus on the average people, not the wealthy ones. The lifestyle (standard) is rising, Vietnamese people want to go outside (the country) to explore.”

Unlike their wealthier counterparts, Vietnam’s middle class tends to stay within Asia, according to Shirline Ng, sales manager at Princess Cruises, because obtaining tourist visas elsewhere can be difficult.

Many countries in North America and Europe grant visas based on one’s income and previous travel record, she explained. “If your passport is totally empty, you can forget about a US (or) Canada visa.”

Meanwhile, similar costs of living make neighbouring nations accessible to Vietnam’s middle class. Sambath Leakhena, sales executive for FCC Hotels in Siem Reap, commented: “They travel to Cambodia and Cambodians are also traveling to Vietnam.”

The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism reported more than 900,000 Vietnamese to Cambodia last year, comprising more than 20 per cent of all foreign visitors to the country.

A DROP in arrivals from Singapore to Malaysia in the first quarter of 2015 has sent tourism authorities scurrying to the neighbouring country to restore marketshare.

Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s minister of tourism and culture, met Singapore’s top travel agency heads and media last week in efforts to boost tourist arrivals from the market.

Malaysia received 13.9 million arrivals from Singapore last year, a 5.7 per cent growth from 2013, but saw an 8.6 per cent drop in the first three months of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014.

Nazri said: “We need to carry out various initiatives to drive growth from Singapore for the remaining months. We are intensifying our efforts here through joint promotions and tactical campaigns.”

Measures would include partnerships with the trade at the Travel Malaysia Fair 2015, joint collaborations with Malindo Air, a Durian Fiesta initiative, the development of special diving packages, the promotion of Malaysia as a music and entertainment hub, as well as tactical campaigns in the market, he shared.

The minister also flagged the introduction of the daily train shuttle service by KTM Berhad between JB Sentral, Malaysia, and Woodlands, Singapore. The service operates seven times a day from Singapore to Malaysia.

He added: “This service provides great convenience to Singapore tourists and complements the existing connectivity that our two destinations currently enjoy. With the support from the airlines industry, we now have 489 flight frequencies per week with 73,314 seating capacity.”

He also publicised the Malaysia Year of Festivals (MyFest) 2015 and urged local travel agencies to work closer with their Malaysian counterparts to develop more creative and innovative holiday packages to the country.
