Hotels limp back to normalcy amid heightened security in Sri Lanka

As Sri Lanka’s tourism industry inches towards recovery amid intensified security after the tragic Easter Sunday carnage, the Kingsbury – one of three hotels subject to suicide bomb attacks – said it will resume normal operations on Thursday.

Imara De Chickera, the hotel’s director of communications and spokesperson, said the hotel would be open for normal operations on Thursday, five days after suicide bombers detonated bombs at this hotel and two others, the Shangri-La and the Cinnamon Grand – all in the capital.

“Our accommodation and banquet operations are open, in addition to three restaurants and a bar,” she said, adding that the main restaurant where the suicide bomb was detonated is closed for repairs.”

Asked whether the hotel was still receiving bookings, she said: “Surprisingly some people called and wanted rooms.” While the Cinnamon Grand has been open throughout with limited operations, the Shangri-La has been closed until further notice.

At least 359 people, including 40 foreigners, died in the attacks at the three hotels and three churches across the land. International Islamic terror group, the ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, while the government has blamed an Islamic extremist group called the National Thowheeth Jama’ath, adding that it had foreign links.

The bombings were believed to be the worst single strike Sri Lanka has seen, even considering the 30-year Tamil separatist conflict which ended in May 2009.

Some hotels are seeing security intensified similar to what was seen during the Tamil separatist conflict, the industry was putting the pieces together to put forward a brave face to the world and demonstrate resilience, much like in the dark days of 1980-2009.

As travel players worldwide express solidarity with the country in the wake of the attacks, Champika De Silva, cluster director of sales at Anantara Resorts in Sri Lanka, said they received assurance and support from foreign operators. Kuoni for example urged some worried patrons to postpone the holiday, instead of cancelling it altogether. “That was very nice and considerate, I thought,” she said.

Two large groups from Australia and France had cancelled bookings while April/May looked bleak. “There is no pick-up in bookings, enquiries are non-existent,” she said, although they had some bookings for October.

Shiromal Cooray, chairperson of Jetwing Hotels, has seen “a fair amount of cancellations”.

With tight security by police, assisted by the military to reinstate order, she expressed hope for the situation to be brought under control very soon.

Stringent security at hotels meant all car parks in the building and its vicinity were closed and vehicles coming to the hotels had to be park elsewhere.

All bags went through stringent checks while metal detectors and other security scanners that some hotels used during the 30-year conflict have been reactivated.

Sanath Ukwatte, chairman of the Mount Lavinia Hotel and president of the Hotels Association of Sri Lanka, said they had about 20-30 per cent cancellations, adding that there was heightened police presence near the hotel as part of state security measures.

“These stringent measures would ease once the situation is brought under control,” he expects. The association was also meeting on April 29 for its routine monthly meeting where the crisis will be reviewed.

Sri Lanka Tourism, in a statement on Tuesday, reassured the world that the country is open for business and all possible measures have been taken to ensure the safety and security of tourists.

“Our world-famous tourism sites, hotels, resorts and other tourist attractions will remain open as usual. There are no road closures or restrictions on movement anywhere in the island,” the NTO said. “We look forward to warmly welcome all those who have planned trips to the country.”

Oyo makes room for new experiences initiative

Having made inroads in major markets around the world including Japan, India-based Oyo Hotels & Homes is now venturing into the experiences sector with the launch of Oyo Near You in its home country.

The new initiative will offer a curated list of experiences and events, targeting locals as well as travellers “wanting to experience something refreshing” and “reasonably priced at convenient locations”, the company wrote in its blog.

House parties among the Oyo experiences available

Activities offered range from house parties, stand up comedies, live performances, movie screenings and wine tasting sessions.

Oyo Near You has been launched in Delhi & NCR where these activities will be held in GK1, GK2, New Friends Colony, Sector 15 Gurgaon, South City 1 Gurgaon and Sector 47 Gurgaon.

In the pipeline are plans to roll out the service in other Indian cities like Bengaluru, Goa, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Pune in the coming months, the company announced.

New group DOSM for Shinta Mani Hotels

Shinta Mani Hotels has appointed Janet Chan as group director of sales & marketing.

Based in Bangkok, Chan will oversee sales and marketing for the four Shinta Mani Hotels in Cambodia including the Bensley Collection properties; Bensley Collection – Shinta Mani Siem Reap and Bensley Collection – Shinta Mani Wild.

Chan brings 20 years’ experience to her role with an extensive background in luxury travel. She began her career in retail travel and entered the luxury sector with Small Luxury Hotels of the World in Sydney. Three years later she joined Preferred Hotel Group as manager, brand development for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Since 2010, she has held a number of senior sales and marketing roles in luxury hotels including Hotel de la Paix Siem Reap and Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Cambodia, VOMO Island Fiji and Raffles Beijing Hotel.

Prior to joining Shinta Mani Hotels, she was most recently director of luxury sales North Asia for Accor’s luxury brands.

Trip.com, the international brand of Chinese OTA giant Ctrip Group, has launched a new rewards programme entitled TripPlus.

Trip.com members will now be able to accumulate loyalty points – dubbed Trip Coins – whenever they book flights and hotels or write a review on Trip.com platforms. Accumulated Trip Coins can be used to gain exclusive discounts on future purchases.

The new rewards programme will enable members to earn 25 Trip Coins for every US$100 spent on flight bookings, 80 Trip Coins for every US$100 spent on hotel bookings, and up to 120 Trip Coins for every hotel review posted.

Members can either make instant savings on Trip.com hotel products by selecting the number of Trip Coins to use when booking, or exchange Trip Coins for access to promo codes.

TripPlus works in tandem with Trip.com’s tier membership system, which includes Silver, Gold and Platinum membership. Members of all three tiers are entitled to exclusive hotel deals, while Gold and Platinum Tier Members will respectively receive 10 per cent and 30 per cent more Trip Coins on any flight or hotel booking.

Higher levels of membership are reached through the separate accumulation of Tier Points on Trip.com platforms, earned through making flight and hotel bookings.

MakeMyTrip now a Contiki preferred sales agent

Vietjet opens HCMC-Bali route
Vietjet will be the first airline to connect Ho Chi Minh City (HVMC) with Bali starting May 29. The four-hour flight will operate five times per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. It departs from HCMC at 08.05 and arrives in Bali at 13.05. The return flight takes off from Bali at 14.05 and lands in HCMC at 17.05. Operated with Airbus A320-A320neo aircraft, the flight will be able to accommodate 180-230 passengers.

AirAsia to connect Bangkok and Sihanoukville
AirAsia will launch direct flights from Bangkok (Don Mueang) to Sihanoukville in Cambodia starting July 1. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, flight FD660 departs from Bangkok at 14.25 to arrive in Sihanoukville at 15.50. FD661 then leaves Sihanoukville at 16.25 for arrival back in Bangkok at 17.45.

Garuda, SIA expand codeshare to Singapore-Jakarta
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Garuda Indonesia have expanded their codeshare agreement to cover services between Singapore and Jakarta. SIA and Garuda Indonesia each operates nine flights per day on the route. The two carriers first started codesharing in 2010 on each other’s flights between Singapore and Denpasar (Bali). In 2014, the agreement was expanded to include flights between Singapore and Surabaya. SIA and Garuda Indonesia operate a combined total of 175 weekly scheduled services between Singapore and Indonesia.

SIA’s regional subsidiary SilkAir also codeshares on Garuda Indonesia-operated flights to Denpasar and Surabaya, while Garuda Indonesia codeshares on SilkAir-operated flights to ten destinations in its Indonesia network.

Qantas to launch winter flights from Sydney to Sapporo
Qantas will launch new direct seasonal flights between Sydney and Sapporo. To coincide with the peak ski season, Qantas will fly thrice weekly to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport between December 16, 2019 and March 28, 2020. The flights will be operated with Qantas’ upgraded Airbus A330 aircraft, offering more than 10,000 seats on the route over this period.

Qantas will be the first airline to fly direct between Sydney and Sapporo and the service will be the national carrier’s fifth route between Australia and Japan.

Hainan Airlines to inaugurate first mainland China-Norway service
Hainan Airlines is planning to launch flights between Beijing and Oslo on May 15. This will be the first direct route between mainland China and Norway as well as the airline’s first non-stop Nordic service. The Beijing-Oslo route, with three round-trip weekly flights will be serviced by an Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 32 seats in business class and 262 seats in economy class.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, HU769 departs Beijing at 01.30 to arrive in Oslo at 05.30. On Mondays and Fridays, HU770 leaves Oslo at 14.30 for arrival in Beijing at 05.30 the following day. The return flight on Wednesdays are scheduled to leave Oslo at 13.55, for arrival in Beijing at 05.00 the next day.

Grab expands super app ambitions into hotel bookings, event tickets

No longer content to be just a ride-hailing and food delivery app, Singapore-based Grab has unveiled its ambitions to become a bigger, better super app with the introduction of four new services – hotel booking, daily trip planning, purchasing of tickets and on-demand streaming – direct from its Grab app.

The four new tiles on the Grab app – named Hotels, Trip Planner, Tickets and Video respectively – will be progressively rolled out in Singapore from today, and will be available to all users in June this year.

Jerald Singh, Grab’s group head of product and design, shared at a media briefing yesterday that outbound travel spend for South-east Asia is expected to hit US$115.9 billion in 2028. With Singapore residents among the most well-travelled in South-east Asia, foraying into accommodation booking is a logical next step for the company.

With the Hotels booking service, Grab users will be able book accommodation from Agoda and Booking.com through the Grab app. Grab users will benefit from exclusive hotel offers, as well as preferential rates for Platinum users, and be able to redeem vouchers to obtain discounts. Free insurance coverage, transport discounts and other benefits and features are also in the pipeline, and will be rolled out soon.

Currently, the Hotels tile is only available to select Grab users, but it will be rolled out to all users next month (May). And while Booking.com has confirmed its partnership with Grab, the integration will only be complete later this year. This Hotels service will be available in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Next, the Trip Planner service will enable Grab users to plan their transit journey with the help of public transportation and end-to-end directions. Available now in select cities of Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta and Klang Valley, the app will offer real-time schedules and statuses in the event of delays or service disruptions. The app will of course, offer the Grab modes of transportation as well.

When asked if public transport fares can be paid with GrabPay (Grab’s payment solution), Singh noted that it is something the company is working on, and plans to roll it out in the near future.

After which, Grab’s Tickets purchasing service will go live in June 2019 in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, in partnership with BookMyShow, an India-headquartered ticketing platform.

The initial launch will allow Grab app users to book movie tickets at Carnival Cinemas and Cathay Cineplexes, but Kenneth Tan, the company’s CEO & head of product South-east Asia, revealed that eventually BookMyShow will move beyond cinema tickets and offer concerts and musicals as well.

Unlike other online ticketing services in the current marketplace, users don’t have to create a new account and will be able to pay seamlessly with GrabPay, while earning GrabRewards points with every transaction.

Grab has also partnered with HOOQ – a video-on-demand service born in Asia – to allow users to stream online video content while on their commute.

Starting in May 2019, all Grab users in Singapore get to enjoy two months of free HOOQ content when they subscribe via their Grab app, and will enjoy a discounted rate of S$7.98 (US$5.90)/month thereafter, payable with GrabPay. Currently available in Indonesia, the video streaming service will also be rolled out to Thailand and the Philippines later this year.

Singh commented: “It is through partnerships that we have become the only true regional super app with multiple services in multiple markets. Last year we announced GrabPlatform to supercharge our partnerships strategy, and we believe that it has become a true differentiator in the region. It enables us to expand into new verticals quicker than we can on our own, at the same time empowers our partners to scale their business with our reach and assets.

“With more than 500 GrabPlatform partners by the end of the year, we’re building an ecosystem that will truly be a force to be reckoned with, an ecosystem that value-adds and serves everyone on our platform, be it drivers, merchants, users or partners,” concluded Singh.

The series of Easter Sunday bombs, which killed at least 321 people and wounded 500, could also deal a crushing blow to Sri Lanka’s fragile economy, of which tourism is a significant revenue generator since the end of the civil war in 2009.

Many tourism industry leaders have condemned the bombings and mourned the loss of lives, while urging the global travel community to stand in solidarity with Sri Lanka by continuing to visit the island nation.

In a circular distributed to partners and friends, Shiromal Cooray, chairman & managing director of Jetwing Travels and chairman of Jetwing Hotels wrote: “It is with profound sadness and a very heavy heart that I write this message to you. I did not in my wildest dreams imagine that terror will strike my beautiful and peaceful island home just a decade after we ended a senseless war. It appears that sinister forces were at play and we are confident that our intelligence and defense personnel will do what needs to be done, to continue that peace and tranquility that attracted and continue to attract many visitors to Sri Lanka.”

She continued: “You have been with us at our worst and seen us through very difficult situations, I ask you again on behalf of all Sri Lankans and especially, our team at Jetwing, please continue in the same spirit, we cannot and must not let these incidents rule our lives.”

Jetwing, unfortunately, lost a young couple, a telephone operator and her fiancé, a steward from its Jetwing Blue team in Negombo, as well as a newlywed guest who stayed with his wife at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo as part of their honeymoon.

While Creative Travel is not directly affected by deadly bombs and all its staff and guests are safe and accounted for, joint managing directors Rajeev Kohli and Rohit Kohli made an emotion appeal to the global travel community.

They said: “One humble request – please do not abandon the destination. The nation survives on tourism and needs the support of the global travel industry. Many nations over the past few years have gone through traumatic natural or man-made incidents that have impacted tourism. But we have also seen many of them getting the affection and support from the tourism fraternity. We hope Sri Lanka will get the same.”

G Adventures’ founder, Bruce Poon Tip, stated that any attack on our religious institutions is an attack on all humanity, regardless of faith. “We cannot allow this wave of division to further separate humanity. We must use this tragic loss to unite us. It’s my belief that compassion for all people, combined with an understanding of different backgrounds, religions and cultures, has the potential to be the fastest path to peace.”

Chic Locations said that Sri Lanka has been one of its most successful destinations over the last two years with excellent client satisfaction, and recommends clients “to continue travelling but adhere to sensible precautions, just as you would in any country following such an attack”.

The UK-based luxury boutique operator added: “Whilst we anticipate there may be some apprehension to travel to the destination, we can assure you that the Sri Lanka destination tourism partners, hotels and ground operators working in tandem with the government are introducing additional measures to ensure safety and allay these concerns.

“We expect that within a few months Sri Lanka will be just as popular as ever, with clients from around the world defiantly refusing to be beaten by any cowardly act. We have experienced this in so many countries including the UK (London and Manchester) and we have no reason to think Sri Lanka will be any different.”

Quieter summer for Malaysia tourism as Indians stay home till election results

Indian summer holidays usually mark the peak inbound period for Malaysia’s tourism, but with the 2019 Indian general election currently being held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, travel trade players in the destination are expecting a dip in business.

Adam Kamal, general manager, Tour East Malaysia, predicts the season will less busy than previous summers and expects the demand to pick up only after the election results have been announced on May 23.

He is counting on regional markets, such as Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei, to make up for the expected drop in the Indian market. He said: “Regional markets are low-hanging fruits and year-round markets.”

Johnson Francis, executive director at Oscar Holidays, said: “We are not getting many enquiries and bookings for the Indian summer holidays. We expect a 30 per cent drop in business from India compared with last summer. Families (will probably only) start travelling only after the election.”

He added: “To make up for the shortfall, we hope to supplement the market with other markets from the Indian sub-continent such as Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We have not had any cancellations after the bombings in Sri Lanka. People are still travelling.”

Meanwhile, Pradeep Kumar, COO, Asian Famous Tours and Travel, is banking on the Middle East market to make up for the shortfall. This, however, also comes with its challenges, as the Balkans are now also competing for Middle Eastern travellers and offering lower airfares and easy air accessibility, he explained.
