New Delhi Aerocity welcomes more hotel openings

LEMON Tree Hotels launched its twin properties – the 287-key Lemon Tree Premier Delhi Aerocity and 207-room Red Fox Hotel Delhi Aerocity – at the end of December, becoming the second operator after Marriott International to open in the hospitality district near Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Said Rahul Pandit, president and executive director of Lemon Tree Hotels: “We expect good demand from the transit, cabin crew and corporate segment. The combo property gives us an advantage as we can cater to upscale and economy travellers. We expect an average occupancy of 50 per cent in the first year of operation.”

Looking ahead, the company intends to have 30 properties with a total of 4,000 rooms in operation by 2016, up from its present 24 hotels and 2,800 rooms.

“At present our nine hotels are in different stages of construction. We have recently acquired a Clarion hotel in Bengaluru and are rebranding it as a 134-room Lemon Tree. We expect to open a 200-room Lemon Tree in Hyderabad by August 2014. Other cities we are opening properties in include Udaipur, Kolkata, Pune, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Chennai,” said Pandit.

Lemon Tree Hotels is also looking at running another Lemon Tree-Red Fox property in Gurgaon.

“Even though our current expansion plan focuses on Lemon Tree and Lemon Tree Premier, we expect our economy brand Red Fox to be the key growth driver as we go ahead,” Pandit added.

Hotel Indigo lands in Bali

INTERCONTINENTAL Hotels Group (IHG) has partnered Bali Perkasa Sukses for the development of Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak, which will mark the brand’s debut on Bali when it opens in 2015.

The 280-key resort situated in Seminyak is close to one of Bali’s popular beachfronts, and will feature both rooms and villas, as well as spa facilities.

HK Disneyland seeks out Good Neighbor hotels

HONG Kong Disneyland Resort has signed the first hotel into the Good Neighbor Hotel Program, which was recently rolled out to encourage the development of business opportunities between the Resort and local hotels.

Through the Good Neighbor Hotel Program, Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong and Hong Kong Disneyland commit to closer collaboration in order to design new travel products and explore possible avenues of partnership in business.

“The launch of Good Neighbor Hotel Program marks a big step forward in the cooperation between the Resort and hotels in Hong Kong. It will benefit both the Resort and partner hotels in close proximity by bringing more guests to each other. In addition to the leisure guests, both parties can also extend the reach of business opportunities to MICE and incentive activities together,” said Terruce Wang, vice president, sales and distribution marketing, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

“Moreover, the Program can enhance guest experience by enabling them to purchase Park tickets from hotel partners in the Program and enjoy shuttle bus service to and from the Park. These will provide guests with more flexibility in planning their itineraries.”

Partner hotels will also be given the Good Neighbor Hotel logo to enable guests to identify participating hotels.

The programme was first launched at Disney Parks and Resorts more than 17 years ago and has seen strong take-up by the travel and trade and consumers alike in the US, Europe and Japan. Over 70 hotels across the globe have joined the programme to date.

Wang added: “The Good Neighbor Hotel Program is the first new chapter we unfold in 2014. The Resort will further develop the Program and partner with more hotels to launch different promotion schemes. We hope to take our business to new levels this year with the support of our partners and create a win-win situation for all involved.”

Luxperience tantalises with pop-up events in key markets

HIGH-END travel trade event Luxperience is dotting the run-up to its annual tradeshow with a number of pop-up experiences around the world.

Under Luxperience’s 2014 Global Pop-Up Programme, a selection of 20 suppliers will be taken directly to key markets around the world to interact and establish business relationships with 50 high-end and corporate travel buyers.

The first Luxperience Pop-Up will splash down in New York at Pranna on Madison Avenue on February 26, 18.00. Suppliers will be able to showcase their products during an informal cocktail event.

Three more Pop-Ups are scheduled to take place this year:
–       London, March 3 at Beaufort House Chelsea, from 16.00
–       Beijing, March 20 at the Waldorf Hotel, from 18.00

Mumbai airport gets capacity boost with new international terminal

MUMBAI’S Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport last week launched its new international terminal, boosting capacity by close to one-third.

Spread over 439,203m2, the new terminal brings the airport’s handling capacity to 40 million from the previous 32 million.

The four-storey glass structure, whose design was inspired by a dancing peacock and the lotus flower, has 208 check-in counters, a day hotel and a transit hotel, an advanced baggage system and a dedicated six-lane elevated expressway.

It also boasts the country’s largest multi-level parking area and cable-stayed glass wall.

Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, who inaugurated the facility, said: “We plan to develop 50 more airports across the country in Tier Two and Three cities. The last 10 years have seen outstanding development of civil aviation infrastructure in the country.”

Veneeta Rawat, director of Amazing Vacations Mumbai, said: “The enhanced capacity of the new Terminal 2 was long overdue as the space (crunch) at one of India’s busiest airports was inhibitive. Mumbai is a major gateway to India and we can expect international carriers to increase flights to the city soon. Demand continues to outstrip supply.”

However, Bloomberg noted that the airport continued to face challenges. The airport must overcome the slums that occupy one-sixth of its land in order to expand its runways, while its interesecting runway and single taxiway means that the facility will find it hard to handle more flights even when the airport’s third and final phase of development wraps up in 2020.

SACEOS to administer MICE enterprise training scheme

The Singapore Workforce Development Authority has appointed the Singapore Association for Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (SACEOS) to promote and administer the Enterprise Training Support Scheme (ETS) for the MICE Industry.

Developed and launched last year by WDA and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), ETS seeks to help companies implement progressive human resource systems that will enhance in-house training infrastructure and capabilities, which will in turn raise skills and productivity of staff. The scheme also enables participating companies to save up to 90 per cent of course fees for accredited Singapore Workforce Skills Qualification training.

With this appointment, SACEOS will act as a one-stop ETS centre for its members, assisting with training grant applications and approval, and expedited reimbursements of training fees. It will also leverage its industry network to help WDA draw more MICE organisations into the ETS scheme.

SACEOS’ expertise in this arrangement will extend to sourcing of reputable and relevant programmes, and training development plans for its members.

Janet Tan-Collis, SACEOS’ president, said: “Our members are extended a very exclusive privilege by WDA. With SACEOS facilitating the entire process from application to reimbursements, there will be immense savings for our members.”

Non-members of SACEOS may also approach the association for the same services, subject to priority rights to members, or contact WDA directly.

Conrad Clifford appointed IATA’s regional VP for Asia-Pacific

IATA has picked Conrad Clifford as its regional vice president for Asia-Pacific, effective February 1.

To be based in the IATA regional office in Singapore, Clifford succeeds Maunu von Lueders, who is retiring from IATA.

He brings more than 30 years of experience in aviation to his new role and was most recently acting managing director of Antrak Air Ghana. He has also worked for Cathay Pacific Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Menzies Aviation Group and Emirates.

Genting gallops into Miami scene

GENTING Group is teaming up with US horse racing associations to break into Miami’s tourism industry as it looks to build a gaming resort.

The company has signed an agreement with Gulfstream Park Racing Association, the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association and the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

In a filing to the Malaysian stock exchange, the Group said: “As part of its overall business strategy and the Group’s expansion plans in the US, Genting continually evaluates opportunities to expand in the leisure, hospitality and entertainment sector.

“The partnership is the initial step towards enabling the Group to create a leisure and entertainment resort, which includes a gaming facility with 2,000 slot machines in Miami, Florida, US.”

Genting and partners have agreed that the Asian gaming group will take a 47.1 per cent stake in the new development, according to Reuters.

Genting last year completed the purchase for a piece of the glitzy Las Vegas Strip with intentions to establish Resorts World Las Vegas on the 35-hectare property (TTG Asia e-Daily, March 5, 2014).

New travel expo to be launched in Mumbai

THE India International and Travel & Tourism Exhibition (IITT) will kick off next week in Mumbai, drawing a host of buyers and sellers from across the globe over three days.

Organised by Asian Business Exhibition & Conferences in collaboration with ITE Group, IITT will run from January 16 to 18 at the MMRDA Exhibition Center in the Bandra Kurla Complex.

The exhibition will occupy 10,000m2, and feature sellers including NTOs, state tourism boards, travel consultants, tour operators, car rental companies, convention centres, cruise liners, golf courses, resorts and hotels, among others. Meanwhile, fully hosted domestic and international buyers, as well as corporates will be in attendance.

Besides the exhibition, IITT will also feature a two-day conference to provide attendees with the opportunity to address key industry issues, expert perspectives and highlight the challenges of the tourism industry.

Other highlights include partner events, MITT & EMITT; pre-fixed appointments; a cultural stage; workshop area; and VIP lounge.

Turkey is the partner country for IITT.
