Mount Anak Krakatau’s latest eruption disrupts flight

Anak Krakatau is an active volcanic island in Indonesia's Sunda Strait

Indonesia temporarily shut eight airports on Sunday as volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau spread across parts of Java and Sumatra, disrupting flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and several other gateways.

Mount Anak Krakatau began erupting late Friday, sending volcanic ash as high as 50,000 feet (15 km), accompanied by rumbling sounds and lava fountains, according to Indonesia’s Geological Agency. The eruption continued through Sunday, with volcanic ash spreading into airspace over parts of Java and Sumatra.

Mount Anak Krakatau is an active volcano in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, and its latest eruption on September 4 could escalate, noted local geological monitors

Dudy Purwagandhi, minister of transportation, said the government had ordered eight airports to temporarily close until September 7 as a precaution, as volcanic ash poses a severe risk to flight safety.

The affected facilities include Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten; Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta; Radin Inten II International Airport in Lampung; Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java; Budiarto Airport in Curug, Tangerang; Pondok Cabe Airport in South Tangerang, Banten; Taufik Kiemas Airport in Pesisir Barat, Lampung; and Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra.

Data from the Ministry of Transportation showed that the closure impacted 964 flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport alone, and over 1,500 flights across all eight airports, stranding roughly 170,000 passengers.

Dudy shared that authorities were conducting paper tests every 30 minutes to check for ash around the airports while collaborating with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) to monitor wind direction, speed, and altitude.

Arie Ahsanurrohim, corporate secretary group head at InJourney Airports (Indonesia’s airport authority), said the company activated its Service Recovery Action programme to provide food and drinks to stranded travellers.

“InJourney Airports has also provided free buses to Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, and Surabaya for passengers affected by the temporary closure of Soekarno-Hatta,” he added.

To handle rerouted air traffic, authorities prepared several alternative airports for 24-hour operation, including Kertajati International Airport in West Java, Yogyakarta International Airport, Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, and Adisumarmo International Airport in Solo.

Speaking at an online press conference, Lana Saria, head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, noted that activity at Mount Anak Krakatau could escalate, as low-frequency, hybrid, and harmonic earthquakes – along with tremors – continue to be recorded.

“These types of earthquakes indicate the movement or release of volcanic fluids within the volcano,” she said.

However, she added that the timing, magnitude, and precise nature of the next eruption remain unpredictable, requiring continuous monitoring.

Palawan to welcome new resort from The Lind Hotels in 2027

Homegrown Filipino hospitality brand, The Lind Hotels, will open a property in Coron, Palawan, next year.

Surrounded by turquoise waters and limestone cliffs, the resort will have 91 rooms and villas designed for privacy and comfort. Private villas come with dipping pools and a dedicated Villa Host to support guests throughout their stay.

The Lind Coron will leverage the beauty, authenticity and adventure of Coron in the Philippines to present a memorable experience to its guests

“We aim to create a resort that belongs in its setting rather than competes with it,” said Pierre Henrichs, chief operating officer of The Lind Hotels. “We want guests to experience the beauty, authenticity and adventure of Coron while enjoying the hospitality and service they have come to associate with The Lind Hotels.”

The Lind Coron will also be a culinary destination, with Yím, its signature modern Thai restaurant, and Crust, located by the infinity pool, which will serve Mediterranean flavours alongside a selection of locally crafted beverages.

The resort will house The Spa Wellness Coron, the country’s first spa brand to earn Superbrand status, as well as its own dive centre operated by one of the Philippines’ diving pioneers.

Indoor and outdoor spaces will make the most of the natural surroundings for celebrations, events and meetings. The Gallery, an indoor venue for up to 200 guests, will offer panoramic sea views, while The Cove brings gatherings outdoors. At the resort’s highest point, the Roof Deck opens to 360-degree views of the sea, mountains and lush greenery, creating a memorable setting for wedding ceremonies, proposals and special occasions.

The opening in Palawan also marks a homecoming for the brand as it was originally where the company’s first acquisition and the idea for the brand took shape. The company later chose the more established tourism spot of Boracay to first introduce the brand.

Trip.com study finds hearty demand for high-end travel

High-end travel is booming like never before, stated Trip.com’s latest data, which shows a 99 per cent year-on-year (YoY) jump in global searches for first and business class flights in the first half of 2026 as well as a 57 per cent YoY increase in five-star hotel searches.

Travellers are increasingly looking for memorable experiences that are fully catered to their needs and preferences. Custom tours on Trip.com, where users are able to chat with a travel expert and book a tour fully tailored to their requests, have seen bookings surged by over 600 per cent YoY globally. The largest demand is coming from China, Hong Kong and Singapore – markets with some of the fastest growth in affluent travellers in the region.

Worldwide searches on Trip.com for “luxury” and “best spas” went up by 170 per cent, reflecting an increased focus on wellness and relaxation as travellers seek premium experiences

Among Trip.com’s top two highest membership reward tiers, known as Black Diamond and Diamond+ members, custom tours are also one of the fastest-growing product lines, suggesting a shift in demand towards customised itineraries and bespoke experiences as travellers spend more on their trips. Recognising this need, the travel company offers Black Diamond members access to a dedicated 24/7 relations management team, allowing deeper personalisation and seamless service that caters to their preferences.

Beyond tailored experiences, live entertainment has emerged as a top reason for people to splurge on trips, as travellers seek unforgettable moments. Sixty-three per cent of Asia-Pacific travellers have already crossed borders for concerts, and 66 per cent are willing to go abroad for one, finds the same study. Identifying this demand, Trip.com Group has launched integrated offerings that combine concert tickets, accommodation, transportation and local attractions into one-stop packages, and this resulted in triple-digit growth in 2025.

For many high-end travellers, wellness and privacy are essential on any trip. Worldwide searches for “luxury” and “best spas” went up by 170 per cent, reflecting an increased focus on wellness and relaxation as travellers seek premium experiences.

Meanwhile, global bookings for “Platinum Luxury Hotels” on Trip.com rose in the first half of this year, with interest concentrating on hotels in China and South-east Asia, and reflecting a growing preference for high-quality stays in this region.

In particular, China has emerged as a popular destination for premium stays at comparatively lower prices. Travellers from Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong have picked up on this trend, forming the largest overseas source markets for quality stays in China.

Trip.com’s study finds that most premium travellers are not constrained by seasonality or budget, making them frequent travellers whether for work or for leisure. Black Diamond members make almost 20 times the number of bookings compared to the average member, suggesting that many high-end travellers are frequent travellers all year round.

Trip.com study finds a strong preference for long-distance destinations when it comes to high-end travellers

This segment of travellers are also choosing longer-distance destinations and extending their stays. International travellers flying first or business class are expected to spend at least 14 days overseas each trip, close to 40 per cent more than the average traveller. This stretches to as long as 20 days when it comes to European premium travellers, based on the study.

In addition, more than four in 10 of first and business class flights booked globally in the second half of this year are long-haul flights, indicating a strong preference for long-distance destinations when it comes to high-end travellers. Japan is a destination that premium travellers frequent, with four out of the top 10 most-booked five-star hotels globally located there, while the Tokyo-Sapporo route is the top-selling first class flight route. Similarly, booking patterns among Black Diamond and Diamond+ members reflect a preference for long-haul destinations.

Premium travellers today comprise largely of the Millennials and Gen X, signalling a higher-placed value on elevated, comfortable and bespoke travel experiences among these age groups. Close to one in two international travellers who booked 5-star hotels in the second half of this year are aged 35 to 49 years old, who also form the largest majority of first and business class flight bookings, based on Trip.com’s data.

A similar trend is observed across various regions, and also among the higher tiers of Trip members, suggesting that Millennials and Gen X worldwide are eager to spend on quality experiences when they travel.

In recent years, demand for senior travel has also grown. With spending power three times that of younger travellers, many affluent and active seniors are increasingly looking to explore and spend on quality travel. Gross hotel bookings for Old Friends Club, an initiative launched by Trip.com Group to cater exclusive products for users aged 50 and above, increased by over 100 per cent YoY in the first quarter of this year.

Sudamala Resort Ubud: Bali’s newest boutique luxury address opens October 2026

Sudamala Resort Ubud offers lush accommodations including this private pool villa

Brought to you by Sudamala Resort Ubud

Sudamala Resort Ubud’s welcoming lobby

Luxury in Bali has been quietly redefining itself. For today’s most discerning travelers, the question is no longer how many pools a resort has, it is whether a place can offer something that cannot be found anywhere else. A genuine sense of belonging to a destination. A story worth telling when you return home.

This is the space Sudamala Resorts has always inhabited. And this October, it arrives in Ubud.

A new boutique luxury resort in Ubud, Bali

Sudamala Resort Ubud opens its doors in October 2026, positioned on Jalan Suweta, just five minutes from the iconic Puri Saren Agung (Ubud Royal Palace) and within easy reach of Ubud’s celebrated art galleries, temples, museums, and artisan communities.

With 46 accommodations, including Deluxe Rooms, Suites, and Private Pool Villas overlooking a serene river valley, the resort offers an intimate alternative to Ubud’s larger properties. For high-value leisure travelers seeking privacy, personalised service, and a deeper connection to their destination, this proposition is increasingly rare.

Its design draws directly from the landscape and culture that surround it, contemporary Balinese architecture, Indonesian craftsmanship, and materials that speak of place, refined without feeling removed.

Beyond accommodation: A gateway into Ubud’s living culture

Sudamala Resort Ubud has been conceived not as a retreat from Ubud, but as a gateway into it.

Tambus Restaurant celebrates Indonesian flavours through a contemporary culinary lens, sourcing ingredients locally and from the resort’s own garden. Tirta Bar and Tepian Bar offer curated settings to begin and end the day, one overlooking the river valley, both rooted in the rhythms of the landscape.

Wellness is equally central. Sudajiva Spa offers holistic rituals inspired by Indonesian healing traditions, a restorative experience that draws from centuries of local knowledge, delivered in one of Ubud’s most naturally tranquil settings.

For romantic travel, the resort’s river valley setting creates an exceptional backdrop for honeymoons, destination weddings, and private celebrations, an increasingly important segment for travel professionals building bespoke Bali itineraries.

Rooted in tradition: The melaspas ceremony

Before welcoming its first guests, Sudamala Resort Ubud observed the Melaspas, a sacred Balinese purification ceremony that blesses a new property and honors the land’s spirits.

This detail speaks volumes about how Sudamala Resorts operates. Since its founding in 2011, every property in the collection has been built not just in its destination, but with it, respecting local traditions, engaging communities, and reflecting the distinctive character of its surroundings. Ubud is no different.

An Indonesian Odyssey: A multi-destination opportunity for travel professionals

The opening of Sudamala Resort Ubud adds a significant new chapter to An Indonesian Odyssey, the brand’s overarching narrative inviting travellers to experience Indonesia not as a single destination, but as a collection of deeply individual places, each with its own culture, landscape, and soul.

The brand’s portfolio now spans:

  • Sudamala Resort Sanur, Bali, coastal village charm and cultural immersion
  • Sudamala Resort Ubud, Bali (opening October 2026), art, culture, and river valley tranquillity
  • Sudamala Resort Senggigi, Lombok, beachfront serenity on Indonesia’s emerging island
  • Sudamala Resort Seraya, Flores, remote island luxury in one of the world’s last untouched wildernesses
  • Sudamala Resort Komodo, Flores, the gateway to Komodo National Park and some of the world’s finest diving

For trade partners, this creates a compelling multi-destination itinerary framework – from Bali to Lombok to Flores – that appeals directly to affluent travellers seeking immersive, curated Indonesian journeys that go well beyond the conventional.

Industry transformation takes centre stage at Singapore Hotel Association’s third Hospitality Exchange

Hilton International Asia Pacific received the Workforce Transformation Award at the Singapore Hotel Association’s Hospitality Exchange 2026 this week

Fresh ideas and practical strategies for hospitality businesses dominated the programme at this week’s Hospitality Exchange (HX), an annual conference hosted by the Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) for more than 300 hotel owners, operators, technology partners and government agency stakeholders.

Resonating with HX 2026’s theme, Hospitality the Next Bound, Kenneth Li, president of SHA, emphasised that the world is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and so are guest expectations.

Hilton International Asia Pacific received the Workforce Transformation Award at the Singapore Hotel Association’s Hospitality Exchange 2026 this week

In his welcome address, Li said: “Guests today are more connected and informed than ever, and that tells us plainly that doing more of the same is no longer good enough. We need to adapt to the changing tourism landscape and stay nimble to remain competitive. Hence, the SHA Hospitality Exchange is positioned to help hotels do just that by sparking ideas and conversations that outlast the day and to change the status quo.”

Guest of honour, Gan Siow Huang, minister of state, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted in her opening address that Singapore welcomed 9.8 million international visitors in the first half of 2026 and generated S$8.6 billion (US$6.8 million) in tourism receipts in the first quarter, but cautioned that moderating global growth, geopolitical tensions, and increasingly discerning travellers are intensifying competition among destinations.

As the sector works towards the Tourism 2040 vision, she called for hotels to keep creating exceptional visitor experiences, highlighting examples such as Swissôtel The Stamford’s new Disney-themed dining concept at Skai restaurant and Changi Airport Group’s Off-Airport Check-In service for Singapore Airlines travellers staying at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore and Marina Bay Sands.

Gan also highlighted initiatives that would help Singapore hotels to go further in delighting their guests.

From November 1, 2026, hotels will gain access to a new hotel-specific Digital Concierge category under Enterprise Singapore’s EDGE for Productivity scheme (previously Productivity Solutions Grant), alongside Singapore Tourism Board’s upcoming service quality masterclasses with quality assurance institutions. To this end, the Singapore Tourism Board and SHA will also roll out a series of service excellence training programmes for the industry.

Besides insightful presentations and panels, HX 2026 also presented the Workforce Transformation Award to Hilton International Asia Pacific. The award, jointly conferred by the Workforce Development Agency and SHA, recognises hotels that have shown outstanding commitment to job transformation and human capital development through job redesign, reskilling, and career health initiatives.

Singapore’s Frasers House crafts opportunities to connect guests with regional artisans

0

Frasers House, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Singapore has launched a cultural initiative that highlights artisans and craftsmen with a strong sense of culture, place and purpose, with curated showcases, retail experiences and hands-on workshops all in the line-up.

Known as The Maker’s Serambi, the recurring bi-monthly programme is birthed from The Luxury Collection by Marriott’s belief that every hotel should serve as a gateway to its destination, offering guests a richer understanding of the place they are visiting through experiences deeply rooted in local culture.

Frasers House, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Singapore’s Klaus Christandl (second from left) with the artisans showcased in the first edition of The Maker’s Serambi series

Every edition of The Maker’s Serambi will be conducted over three days, from the last Friday of the scheduled month through Sunday, from 12.00 to 18.00.

The inaugural edition was hosted on August 27 to 30, featuring Sonia Pasupathy of Pasupathy Jewellery, who is known for her handcrafted silver pieces; textile artist Wang Xiao Ting from A Bright Place, who works with natural dyes derived from plant-based pigments; and Sifr Aromatics, which presented its collection of perfume oils and candles alongside intimate workshops at its booth.

The next round will be held on October 30 to November 1, 2026. It will feature ceramicist Stephanie Zheng of Yun the Potter and leather artisan Maverick Made – both curated by Eastside, who will work closely with them to develop bespoke pieces exclusively for The Maker’s Serambi.

Klaus Christandl, general manager of Frasers House, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Singapore, shared that plans are underway for a hands-on session that will give guests the opportunity to learn a craft directly from one of the participating artisans.

“Our aim is to give visitors the opportunity to engage directly with the makers and gain a deeper appreciation of their craft,” he added.

He also told TTG Asia that his team is “open to partnering with both emerging and established artisans in the region, focusing on makers who have a distinctive story to tell through their craft, materials and creative practice”.

“Our selection process is shaped by the communities around us. We work with cultural partners such as Eastside, who bring a strong understanding of the region’s creative landscape and introduce makers they believe are a natural fit for the series. At the same time, we look closer to home, drawing inspiration from our neighbours in Kampong Gelam, such as Sifr Aromatics. This allows The Maker’s Serambi to bring together different expressions of craftsmanship while remaining closely connected to the neighbourhood and wider creative community,” he explained.

The events are designed to be accessible to all visitors to Frasers House. While in-house guests may have earlier access through the concierge upon check-in, the programme is open to both staying guests and members of the public.

Besides enriching the guest experience and bringing Frasers House’s positioning as A Living House of Craftsmanship to life, Christandl believes that The Maker’s Serambi series will differentiate the hotel beyond the traditional hotel stay.

“Ultimately, we believe that when a hotel becomes a place people want to discover, return to and engage with, whether or not they are staying with us, that creates long-term value for the business and the destination,” he said.

The luxury hotel offers other cultural interactions besides The Maker’s Serambi. A Curated Sensory Journey is an ongoing walking tour that is created by the hotel’s concierge team. The journey invites guests to experience Kampong Gelam through its sights, sounds, scents, tastes and textures – from the colourful streets of Haji Lane and the architectural character of Parkview Square to the sounds surrounding Sultan Mosque and textiles that reflect the district’s historic trading heritage.

Another programme is Epicurean Moments, where familiar Singapore flavours are reimagined in playful and unexpected ways. Guests can enjoy cookies inspired by ondeh ondeh and chicken rice, accompanied by Teh Kita, the hotel’s distinctive interpretation of teh tarik, a local milk tea.

“Together, these experiences offer guests different ways to encounter Singapore through its neighbourhoods, craftsmanship, flavours and traditions, while creating a stronger sense of place throughout their stay,” stated Christandl.
