Online transactions ride strong in the Middle East

MOBILE data transactions in the Middle East and North Africa region have been forecast to grow at a faster rate than other parts of the world.

Cisco predicts that the number of mobile devices in the region will hit 598 million by 2018, a far cry from 2013’s 133 million. The Internet is also emerging as a preferred mode of travel consumption in recent years with one out of every six consumers booking online, according to Cisco.

Kara Moddermann, industry manager – travel, Middle East & North Africa, Google, said during a seminar at ATM 2014: “Using mobile gadgets seems to be distinctively preferred by travellers in the region.”

Separately, PhoCusWright has reported that OTA sales in the Middle East crossed US$2.3 billion in 2013 and usage is expected to escalate by up to 17 per cent by end-2014.

Najeh Boughzala, project manager, Alpha Tours Dubai, said: “The online booking of flights and hotels is definitely on the rise and will continue to be so as comparison of prices to get the most competitive offer is relatively easy online. Moreover, youngsters like to search, find and often decide immediately. Handheld gadgets are very convenient for such decisions and purchases.”

“However, multi-destination tour booking and transfers are still booked through tour operators.”

RB Capital invites tenders for Gallery Hotel Singapore rebranding

JLL’s Hotel & Hospitality Group is launching a tender on behalf of RB Capital Group, opening an RFP exercise for hotel management companies to operate Gallery Hotel.

Located in Robertson Quay along the Singapore River, Gallery Hotel is slated to undergo a major revamp to reposition and integrate the property with the Quayside retail podium RB Capital purchased from Robertson Quay Investment last year (TTG Asia e-Daily, August 2, 2013).

Tasos Kousloglou, senior vice president, asset management, JLL, Hotels & Hospitality, said: “Choosing the right brand and operator is one of the most important decisions for a hotel owner as it involves a long-term relationship. It is also paramount to the project’s success as well as the hotel’s profitability and asset value. Destination Asia Thailand courts Indian inbound with new division

DESTINATION Asia Thailand has opened a new inbound India division to bring travellers to the kingdom.

Pornthip Hirunkate, managing director of Destination Asia Thailand, said about the new division: “Destination Asia Thailand sees great potential in the India market, especially at the top end leisure and MICE segments. We have conducted extensive research and believe that we can offer unique travel products for the India market that will also include longer length of stays.”

“Destination Asia is also one of the leading MICE operators in Thailand so we will now be extending that decades of experience to the sub-continent,” Pornthip added.

The company’s inbound India division will not have any equity in any outbound India travel company or provider, with all inbound services to be provided by the respective companies in the 11-country Destination Asia Group, said the DMC in a statement.

According to James Reed, CEO of the Destination Asia Group, the creation of an inbound India division at the DMC’s Thailand office is only the beginning of its attempts to tap the Indian travel segment,

He said: “The Destination Asia Group is expanding rapidly in the Far East and we see the inbound India market as very complimentary to our business model. We will, soon, also be opening ‘inbound India’ divisions in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam and eventually to our other companies in China, Japan, Indonesia, Laos and Burma (Myanmar). The India economy is growing rapidly and we definitely see a top-end market that is complementary to our service model and ‘industry best’ operating standards.”

Rajesh Nair has been appointed as general manager/India to head the team. He has extensive experience in the inbound India market and been living in Thailand for eight years.

Bangkok Airways offers extra flight to Naypyidaw for May

BANGKOK Airways will run additional flights between Bangkok and Myanmar capital Naypyidaw between May 5 and 30.

From May 16 to 30, the extra flight departs Bangkok at 17.00 and arrives in Naypyidaw at 19.00. The return flight leaves Naypyidaw at 20.05 and reaches Bangkok at 23.05.

For the period from May 6 to 12, the extra flight takes off from Bangkok at 18.25 and arrives at 19.35. The return flight leaves Naypyidaw at 20.25 and reaches 22.35.

The additional flights increases the airline’s current Bangkok-Naypyidaw frequency from five times weekly flights to daily.

Bangkok Airways commenced flights to Mandalay and Naypyidaw last September (TTG Asia e-Daily, August 22, 2013).

Sabah to restrict access to high-risk kidnapping areas

THE Sabah state government will impose a curfew and travel restrictions on the waters off Lahad Datu and Sandakan in the wake of the latest kidnapping incident, according to local media.

Malaysian police had not provided details on the ban at press time, but local daily The Star reported Sabah chief minister Musa Aman as saying that the state would implement control areas where entry would be prohibited or restricted based on time, place and situation.

Chinese national and fish farm manager Yang Zai Lin was kidnapped yesterday from his workplace, Wonderful Terrace on Pulau Baik (Baik Island), about 30km south of Lahad Datu.

This kidnapping came two days after pirates attacked and robbed four fishermen on Sunday at Tanjung Labian, close to Kampung Tanduo, both of which had seen the invasion of Sulu gunmen in February 2013.

In November last year, gunmen abducted a Taiwanese tourist, Chang An Wei, and killed her husband, Lee Min Hsu, from Pom Pom Island, off Semporna (TTG Asia e-Daily, April 8, 2014). Chang was rescued 36 days later from Jolo, an island in the Philippines.

Arokia Das, senior manager at Luxury Tours Malaysia, said: “We’ve tried very hard to push the islands off Sabah to the Asian and South Asia markets but there has been no interest since the Pom Pom Island incident in November. This latest incident yesterday coupled with the intended curfew and travel restrictions is going to be a further deterrence. Holidaymakers don’t fancy visiting places where there are safety issues.”

Shangri-La makes a point in London’s iconic Shard

SHANGRI-LA Hotels and Resorts has launched its maiden property in the UK within the landmark The Shard development.

Occupying floors 34 to 52, Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London is located in the tallest building in Western Europe and overlooks London icons such as the Houses of Parliament, Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. It is south of the River Thames and minutes from the city of London.

The hotel’s 202 guestrooms and suites are some of the largest hotel rooms in London, averaging more than 42m2, with butler service provided for suites. Free Internet access is available throughout the premises.

Guests can choose from the hotel’s three F&B outlets: Ting, for Asian specialties and locally sourced cuisine with Asian flavours; Lang, a patisserie and artisan deli; and Gong, London’s highest champagne and cocktail bar that will be opened on May 19. Gong is located on the 52nd storey, where the hotel’s gym and infinity pool are also situated.

For meetings and events, Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London offers three river-facing event spaces connected to the sky lobby by a grand staircase. These venues will fit between 10 and 140 people, or planners can book out the entire 34th floor for a standing reception of 200 pax.

To mark the occasion, Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London’s opening rates begin from 450 pounds (US$764) per room per night, including VAT. The hotel’s Room With A View package starts from 530 pounds per night based on twin sharing with breakfast for two and two tickets to viewing platform The View from The Shard, including VAT.

Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London is the group’s 83rd hotel and third in Europe, following the openings of Shangri-La Hotel, Paris and Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

Tune Hotel to open flagship at klia2

TUNE Hotels will close its hotel at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) and open a flagship hotel at klia2 on May 9.

The 400-key Tune Hotel klia2 will be connected to the new terminal via a covered walkway and link bridge, allowing guests to reach the terminal, check-in counters and Gateway@klia2 shopping mall within a 10-minute walk.

Mark Lankester, group CEO of Tune Hotels, said Tune Hotel klia2 will be the largest Tune Hotel.

The hotel features a casual seating lounge with free Wi-Fi, an open-air courtyard lounge, a 24-hour restaurant and beverage centre, 167 parking bays, a transport counter for guests with further transportation needs, and two AirAsia self check-in kiosks within the lobby. The lobby area also displays up-to-date flight information on arrivals and departures.

Transit passengers who walk in to the hotel can opt for a short-stay Refresher Package, available between 09.00 and 18.00, subject to availability.

Guests with reservations at the current Tune Hotel KLIA LCCT will be automatically transferred to the property at klia2 on May 9.

“To facilitate guest relocation, all in-house guests will be provided complimentary transfer to the klia2 terminal building and Tune Hotel klia2 on May 9. For guests with bookings for 9 May and after, check-in will be at the Tune Hotel klia2,” Lankester said.

Affected guests will be notified by email.

AirAsia Group has also moved all its LCC operations to the new terminal, which opened on May 2 (TTG Asia e-Daily, April 25, 2014).

PRESENCE  Apple Vacations and Conventions does ticketing, as well as sells inbound and outbound tour packages. It is very convenient to get to as it is strategically located along the commercial area of Jalan Sultan Ismail, within walking distance from the monorail station and shopping centres such as Lot 10, Sungei Wang Plaza, Low Yat Plaza and the H&M Kuala Lumpur flagship store. The huge LED signage on the building makes it hard to miss.

Stepping in, I instantly feel relaxed and calm as the store has a soothing ambience. It is a stark contrast from the heat and incessant traffic outside.

APPEARANCE The travel consultants are dressed smartly in uniforms and wear name tags. One of the consultants walked up to me, greeted me pleasantly and asked me if she could help. I told her I wished to go to Europe for a holiday with friends and she promptly asked me to take a seat opposite her. While we were talking about European tours, a member of staff came up and served me green tea. I felt so at home.

EASE The travel consultant serving me knew her products well. I showed interest in Western Europe and she showed me an 8D5N itinerary covering the Netherlands, Belgium and France. I asked loads of questions, from visa requirements to vegetarian meals and discounts for seniors and children, and she answered them unhesitatingly. The tour consultant sitting next to the person serving me was free at the time and shared her experiences, having been on this tour before. I came away impressed with the customer service and product knowledge.

SUGGESTIONS There should be more collaterals and marketing materials around. For instance, I felt the company could provide more reading materials on travel destinations as some customers may visit without a firm idea of where to travel. There should also be huge banners and reading materials on current promotions. It would have helped to make Wi-Fi available to visitors, as some clients might want to discuss their travel itineraries with their partners on Viber or WhatsApp or other smartphone apps.

I saw a huge television screen playing a film on animal conservation in some foreign land. I felt it would have been more impactful if the audio hadn’t been dimmed.

FRHI warms up for F1 season across the world with special offers
