Bangkok shortlisted to host 2017 Skal World Congress

0

TOURISM and hospitality professionals in Bangkok received a boost yesterday with news that the city has been shortlisted to host the Skal International World Congress in 2017.

Skal Club Bangkok submitted a bid to host the popular annual event in the face of stiff competition from five other Skal clubs based in Hyderabad, Stavanger, Toronto, Miami and Copenhagen.

Hyderabad is also shortlisted and the final decision will be made in a secret ballot of all Skal voting members attending the 2015 World Congress in Torremolinos, Spain in late October.

Skal members in Bangkok believe that up to 1,000 delegates could be visiting Thailand in 2017 if Bangkok wins the vote in Spain.

Dale Lawrence, president of Skal International Bangkok, said: “The decision to shortlist Bangkok reinforces our belief that the city is a first-class destination for business and leisure travellers and it is a timely confidence booster for all those working in Thailand’s tourism industry in the wake of the tragic event that took place on August 18.”

Cashed-up, time-rich: how to sell travel to seniors

0

THE travel industry is not doing enough to tap into the lucrative senior travel sector, according to travel marketing firm MyTravelResearch.com.

Bronwyn White, co-founder of MyTravelResearch.com, urges travel marketers to change their marketing techniques to better cater to senior travellers, instead of perpetuating cringe-worthy stereotypes that most seniors cannot relate to.

She suggests the utilisation of ageless marketing techniques, especially through imagery, emphasising on universal values such as love, friendship, loyalty, altruism and fitness.

High prices are also non-issues for seniors as they are not obsessed with cheap deals but would rather opt for value-for-money offers such as travelling during off-peak periods and getting late check-outs.

White also added that marketers need to be smart about search engine use and avoid using the term ‘senior’ on their website unless it refers to a specific package. An overuse of the term becomes off-putting, she said.

Furthermore, most seniors are less interested in acquiring material assets and are seeking to gain life-changing experiences in their travels, added White.

Lastly, White’s research has also tracked a rapid growth in single seniors wanting to travel, with most of them being women who may be newly divorced or widowed.

MyCEB adopts a “focused theme” for second Malaysia Business Events Week

0

THE second edition of the Malaysia Business Events Week (MBEW) next month will go with a focused themed centred on building a sustainable and resilient MICE industry, a change from the general view taken in its debut last year.

To be held from September 21 to 23 at Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur, MBEW is expected to draw some 300 participants from a cross section of the MICE industry – hotels, convention venues, airlines, DMCs, PCOs, PEOs, event management companies, suppliers, technology providers, associations, government agencies and academic institutions.

Zulkefli Sharif, CEO of the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) which organises this event, said: “In our inaugural event last year, we explored general MICE topics and engaged a handful of international speakers. This year, we decided to develop a focused theme that would encourage the Malaysian MICE players to collaborate in designing the future course of the industry. Collectively we can prepare a roadmap to build a sustainable industry that is resilient to an ever changing and at times unpredictable global environment.

“In addition, through the provision of education, networking, exchange of ideas and debate of issues in the three-day event, we hope that the Malaysian business events industry will be better equipped to take ownership of its future.”

A new feature of MBEW is a by-invite forum for government and industry leaders, which will explore how the public and private sectors can work closely to enhance Malaysia’s status as a preferred MICE destination in Asia.

MBEW attendees can expect to tap the brains of 20 renowned speakers through plenary sessions, break-out sessions on leadership, sales and marketing and operations, and cluster sessions categorised by the various MICE segments, namely convention, exhibition and incentive.

Key sessions include Designing a sustainable future by MCI Global’s Guy Bigwood and Roger Simmons; Unlocking The Future Through Creativity by L&R Contract Business Services’ Ruth Lillian; and What the Future Holds – Towards 2020 by Performance Management and Delivery Unit Malaysia’s Idris Jala.

Zulkefli remarked: “The topics are carefully crafted to ensure all MICE segments are covered and are applicable for all levels of the business events (profession), from junior right up to the senior team.”
