UK to launch preferred agency scheme in India

UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) is looking to introduce a new preferred agency programme in India next month, aimed at easing the visa application process for travel agents and their clients.

“The new scheme will allow UKVI to work more closely with trusted agents who will be accountable for the applications they verify. We will train agents so that they can verify applicants on UKVI’s part and ensure the applications they are submitting are genuine. This will ensure the process is clear, competitive and straightforward,” said James Brokenshire, the UK’s immigration minister who was on a five-day visit in India.

The trained and accredited travel agents will be provided a designated contact at UKVI to facilitate the visa process.

“We are piloting the scheme with nearly 50 Indian travel agents to test it, a relatively small number, but we are looking at steps that will help us roll out the scheme to more agents. We expect a third of our visa applications to come through the preferred agent scheme in the future,” said Brokenshire, adding that the security of the UK is of utmost importance and companies who misuse the facility will be dealt with harshly.

Brokenshire also announced that UKVI is extending its same-day, super-priority visa services to study and work visas as well as first-time visitors. A new visa application centre is also being planned in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

FROM March 4 to 6, NATAS will welcome guests at its 48th travel fair held at the Singapore Expo.

This year, the Spanish ambassador to Singapore, Miguel Angel Navarro Portera will grace the opening of NATAS Travel 2016 as guest-of-honour.

Highlights of the fair include six different cruise itineraries to Asia, Europe, America and the Caribbean, as well as custom tour packages for FITs offered at the Gutereise! and Green Island booths.

For every S$500 (US$356) spent, visitors can also stand to win draw prizes including flights to Europe, China, Laos, Hong Kong and Indonesia, luxury hotel stays, as well as Trafalgar land tours in Switzerland, France and Spain. The top prize is a pair of Singapore Airlines business class tickets to Düsseldorf, worth S$19,800.

But Steven Lek, executive director of NATAS said that there are more to this year’s offerings than cheap deals and giveaways.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital, NATAS’ strategic healthcare partner, will be at the fair to provide advice on travel related vaccinations and health matters as part of a larger initiative to provide education on travel health.

“On top of health talks, visitors can also enjoy cultural performances and sample food represented by various countries such as Italian pasta, Japanese samurice, Si Chuan dan dan noodle, Turkish kebab, Taiwanese street food as well as liquors and wines,” Lek added.

Villas in vogue

Increasing visitor numbers to the island, combined with the trends of experiential and generational travel, are turning villas and residences into a growth market for Phuket

While Phuket has long been an established destination in Thailand, the unrelenting wave of tourist arrivals continues to drive the island’s ever-growing hospitality scene. One bright spot has been holiday villa rentals, a market whose popularity has soared on the back of rising visitor numbers as well as the increased demand for villas as getaways for couples, families and groups of friends.

The flexibility to tailor-make one’s accommodation services without being tied to hotel timings and space is the biggest drawcard for guests opting to stay in villas, observed Exo Travel Thailand product manager Kim Martin Rasmussen, who sees strongest demand for Phuket’s villas coming from luxury agents from the US, Australia and Europe.

“There is a clear trend towards individuality in travelling, with tourists preferring to stay in their own villa or share it with a small group of friends or family members,” said Tobias Fischer, director of business development, Go Vacation Thailand.

“When broken down into the price per person, staying in a villa is often even cheaper, yet more luxurious and exclusive than staying in a hotel,” he added.

Recognising the potential of the villa rental market, which is commonly associated with privacy, exclusivity and bespoke concierge service, Go Vacation Thailand has joined hands with local serviced villa rental company, Thailand Holiday Homes, to roll out a new service featuring villas across major tourist destinations in Thailand. Guests can choose between self-catering or fully serviced options including the hire of cleaning staff and cooks.

Meanwhile, Diethelm Travel Group launched a Spotlight on Villas e-brochure in September last year for its overseas business partners.

Said the group’s Thailand managing director, Hans van den Born: “The market and demand for luxury villas in Phuket and other destinations within Thailand has been growing over the past few years and I do not see that it is saturated at all. Now Phuket has a great variety of villas to offer, not only for the ultra high-end but also more for the mid-range budgets.”

In his latest Phuket Luxury Villa Rental Market report, Bill Barnett, managing director of C9 Hotelworks, wrote that Phuket’s luxury holiday villas have broadly seen upward trading during the low season in 2015 from the corresponding period in 2014, with a shift from the longhaul to regional markets.

“In the past, Asians favoured smaller unit sizes more, while bigger unit configurations were predominantly occupied by European guests,” said Barnett. “A surge in shorthaul multigenerational travel and combination of friends and family is seeing the regional rental market gradually shifting toward larger unit types ranging from five- to eight-bedroom villas.”

Sharing similar observations, Thomas Kaercher, international channel agent at Thailand Holiday Homes, remarked that villa holiday rentals are “an upcoming market in Asia” but few Asian travellers are aware that serviced pool villas are available for rent in Thailand.

He remarked: “For Phuket and the other islands, I foresee the overseas markets (Europe, Australia, the US) will be the strongest for beach holidays longer than eight nights. For Pattaya, it’s the Asian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese as well as the Russian markets, which spend between two to eight nights.”

Many resort companies have swiftly added villas and residences to their portfolio. The opulent Iniala Beach House is home to three villas and 10 bedrooms, joining the top echelons of Phuket’s villa market when it debuted in 2014. Banyan Tree Phuket recently marked its 21st year milestone with its revamp into an all-pool villa resort. In nearby Phang Nga, Aleenta Phuket Resort & Spa has launched the five-bedroom Grand Villa Noi residence.

Keemala Phuket, which opened its doors in December 2015, features 38 keys across four villa types ranging in size between 126m2 to 185m2. While the island’s hospitality scene is becoming “saturated” with “many more projects in the pipeline”, acknowledged the property’s director of sales and marketing Nurat Atibaedya, an increasing array of stylish and diverse offerings the likes of Keemala provides opportunities to woo the luxury travel market in particular.

Last November, Anantara Layan Phuket Resort added 15 sea-facing, three- to five-bedroom pool residences varying from 1,700m2 to 2,200m2 to its inventory of 30 rooms and suites and 47 pool villas.

“These residences are ideal for global leisure family travellers, or couples looking for a different vacation option away from the hustle and bustle,” said Sascha Hemmann, general manager at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort. “We see both domestic and international demand, notably from Hong Kong and the UK.”

UK to offer new convenient visa scheme for Indian MICE groups

0

STARTING next month, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is launching a new scheme to support Indian companies bringing groups of 150 or more delegates into the UK, making the visa application procedure a more straightforward one for event organisers.

“In the last few years, UKVI has tried to improve its visa offers for Indian travellers. The new MICE scheme recognises the growing value of this market, and we are keen to support organisations bringing large groups to the UK,” said James Brokenshire, UK’s immigration minister who was on a five-day visit to India.

MICE groups will be given a point of contact at UKVI to discuss their trip and visa requirements, as well as a checklist of supporting documentation required. The organiser will then be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding and agree to screen all visa applicants to ensure that they are eligible to apply for a visit visa under the MICE scheme. Once the applications are received, UKVI will assess them together as a group and return them in a timely manner.

Applicants under the MICE scheme can apply for their UK visa up to six months in advance. UKVI is also offering an option to avail premium services – such as group appointments where members can apply at the same visa application centre on a particular day and time – at an extra cost. Applicants can also utilise a priority service, allowing them access to a visa in three to five days.

“The processing time for group visas was previously long and there was uncertainty whether all travellers in the group will be issued a visa. Now with a dedicated point of contact, MICE organisers will be able ensure that all required documents are in place and their queries are addressed promptly,” commented Jasbir Singh, head – outbound tours, Travel Spirit International.

Signature Events Programme by Shangri-La Philippines made sweeter

0

TO BRING repeat business and attract new ones, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Philippines relaunched its Signature Events Programme with a dash of sweetener during the second year of its MICE Fair last week.

Since the introduction of the enhanced Signature Events Programme a few years ago, Lorrie Gamalinda, director of sales of Shangri-La’s national sales office – Philippines said “there has been a steady increase in MICE business” across the five Shangri-La hotels in the country. The programme provides specialised service delivery and greater value-added service for event group bookings with a minimum of 25 rooms.

With the opening of Shangri-La at The Fort, Manila next month, the relaunch is also intended “to further create awareness for meeting planners on the bigger benefits and savings when they book with Shangri-La,” she added.

The sweetener to the Signature Events Programme is in the form of exclusive rewards for local groups when they book multiple Shangri-La hotels. The contract must be signed on or before March 31, 2016 for stays until December 31, 2016.

Exclusive rewards can either be for booking a minimum of two hotels or resorts with at least 500,000 pesos (US$10,513) in combined room and catering revenues per hotel, or revenue-based rewards for a minimum of one million pesos (US$21,027) in combined room and catering revenues per hotel.

“Just like last year, the MICE Fair served as a platform to further amplify the strength and position of Shangri-La Philippine properties as the leader in the MICE market. It also showcases the unique selling points of each hotel (and provides) fresh and innovative ideas for meetings, teambuilding sessions and other important corporate activities,” Gamalinda said.

Singapore Expo introduces complimentary, high-speed Wi-Fi

0

SINGAPORE Expo is now able to offer seamless connectivity to more than 15,000 concurrently active devices – the highest in Asia – to all of its 10 exhibition halls at Singapore Expo and 32 meeting rooms at MAX Atria.

The infrastructure upgrade includes two high-speed fibre broadband connections and the most advanced wireless access points. Both are designed for optimal performance due to continuous operation, and workload generated from concurrently active devices.

Aloysius Arlando, CEO of SingEx Venues, said: “With Wi-Fimax, we now offer event organisers, exhibitors and delegates highly flexible and customisable Wi-Fi access; and not just limited to basic Wi-Fi services normally provided by some venues.”

Michael Lim, director of human resource and information technology, SingEx Holdings, said: “The system is part of an upgrade that extended the Wi-Fi service to cover both the entire Singapore Expo and MAX Atria. Only the MAX Atria was covered previously. Along with this upgrade, we are now able to deliver higher user densities and bandwidth.”

The complimentary Wi-Fi service is suitable for webmail, social media and normal Internet browsing. Nevertheless, event organisers who require higher bandwidth of over 2Mbps have the option to increase the bandwidth according to their requirements.

According to Lim, depending on the exact requirements such as bandwidth and the number of concurrent devices, the venue can work out a package for event organisers, which can be scaled accordingly.
