Coex gets Muslim-friendly with provision of prayer room

0

COEX convention and exhibition centre in Seoul has become the first venue of its kind in South Korea to offer a prayer room for Muslim visitors.

Explaining the move, Bo Kyung Byun, president and CEO of Coex, said: “As the number of our internationally oriented exhibitions has increased, so too have the numbers of our Muslim guests. We want to make sure our international guests feel at home at Coex, no matter where they are from.”

The new prayer room is located on the third floor of Coex and features separate rooms for men and women. To accommodate daily prayer schedules, the room is open from 03.00 to 22.00.

Other prayer necessities, including Qu’rans, clocks, carpets and a Qibla which indicates the direction towards Mecca, are also provided for the convenience of Muslim guests.

“This prayer room not only offers convenience to (Muslim) buyers and MICE visitors coming to Coex, but also encourages cultural exchange in the fields of trade and tourism,” said Mohammed Chraibi, chief director of the Korea-Arab Society.

New destination on the rise

Park Inn by Radisson Clark

Clark in Pampanga is enjoying a tourism investment renaissance, thanks to the forthcoming expansion of its airport and the growing number of property developers lured by prices half of those in nearby Metro Manila.

Poised to become the premier gateway in Pampanga once completed, the construction of Clark International Airport’s new passenger terminal building will begin in 2016. It will have a capacity to handle three million passengers a year.

The second phase will be an expansion of the same terminal building so it can handle an additional five million passengers annually.

Several foreign airlines already operate to Clark International Airport. Even AirAsia Philippines, whose hub is now in Manila, would want to return to Clark if the planned road network connecting to Manila/Makati pushes through.

On the property front, the 164-key Park Inn By Radisson recently opened in December in Clark while the 77-key Best Western Plus Hotel opened in Subic. Both are aimed at business and leisure travellers.

Located in the 288ha Clark Green City, the five-star Midori Clark Hotel and Casino has soft-opened in December. The 111-room establishment boasts outdoor bathtubs on balconies in some of its suites. Rooms also feature high-end Dedon furniture, Sealy beds, and Acca Kappa and L’occitane bathroom amenities.

Darlene Achumbre, assistant sales and marketing manager of Midori Clark Hotel, said Clark is already a fast-growing business and leisure destination, and that the expansion of Clark International Airport will create more flights, improve business prospects and boost tourism.

Set to open in 2017 is the 260-room five-star Marriott at Clark, launched in partnership with the Korean owner of Widus Hotel & Casino, which has also invested in a 600-seat convention centre.

Also, Korean company Donggwang Clark Corp will build an international hotel brand in its Clark SunValley Resorts and Country Club. The property’s two 18-hole championship golf course are already open.

Clark’s potential was why Afro Asian Travel and Tours president and managing director Angel Ramos Bognot decided to base the annual international event, B2B Travel Business Exchange, in Clark, beginning since 2015.

“Logistically speaking, Clark makes (the show) easy to manage; it’s near Manila, it’s safe and secure and the airport is one of the best in Asia. It’s a growing destination,” Bognot pointed out.

Bognot added that attractions including the Fontana’s Water Theme Park, Dinosaur Island, Zoobic Safari, and Zoocobia Fun Zoo will add to Clark’s appeal to families.

The Bicol Region is poised to become an ecotourism hub with its abundance of natural attractions and outdoor activites, but care must be taken to ensure its sustainable development

29-jan-10042554_xxl

Not yet a prime tourist destination, the undeveloped Bicol Region in south-eastern Luzon is still considered to be malleable and relatively easy to develop an ecotourism blueprint, compared with mature destinations with similar aspirations.

While there’s no denying that Bicol has what it takes to become an ecotourism hub, will it be able to sustain it in the long term? Bicol’s local governments appear keen to play the cards right in the province’s ecotourism development.

Joey Salceda, governor of Albay province – the gateway to Bicol – has been emphasising ecotourism by reducing the province’s carbon footprint and increasing its forest cover by 88 per cent to 45,000ha. He said: “Tourism forces us to become green as it’s what tourists come here for.”

Salceda said the present Legazpi airport will be converted into a tourism hub that is similar to Sentosa in Singapore. However, development will be limited to three or four storeys so as not to obstruct the view of the iconic Mayon Volcano.

He added that Albay tourism is entering the investment-led phase of growth, and is actively courting investors to place their money in resorts and ease the room shortage.

Department of Tourism Bicol has outlined long-term ecotourism goals in anticipation of higher visitor arrivals to the region with developments such as the opening of the new Bicol International Airport in Daraga, Albay in 2018, according to director Maria Ravanilla.

There are also concrete plans to develop more ecotourism products based on the region’s vast wealth of natural sites and attractions, she added.

Aside from sprucing up Albay, the province has joined hands with the neighbouring provinces of Masbate and Sorsogon to form the AlMaSor tourism alliance. A similar alliance with three other provinces – Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes – is already in place, Ravanilla said.

Speaking during the PATA New Frontiers Forum held in Albay in November, PATA CEO Mario Hardy lauded Albay’s ecotourism goals: “There are not many destinations anymore that you see are green…an indication that you have something unique here.”

Donsol, in the province of Sorsogon, is home to a sustainable community-based whaleshark encounter programme, which has been so successful in elevating local livelihoods that the previously fourth class municipality is now third class and on its way to becoming first class.

AA Yaptinchay, a marine wildlife expert and also the general manager of Kirschner Travel Manila, is widely credited as the person who developed Donsol’s community-based whaleshark encounter. He emphasised that marine wildlife should be protected, not exploited; tourists should also be educated, and not just entertained.

“We see lots of misguided and misused ecotourism. (Most people) think that anything with beach or sea is ecotourism, but ecotourism should have an educational aspect to it. It’s about helping the community and enhancing the natural sites,” Yaptinchay said.

One of Albay’s main attractions is the ATV rides on the slopes of Mayon Volcano. While this may seem a harmless activity not uncommon in other countries too, several delegates at the PATA New Frontiers Forum remarked that it is not ecotourism and that the social and environmental impacts of the ATVs should be considered.

JP Cabalza, managing director of Cencorp Travel and Tours, said that “protection (of tourist attractions) should be given priority to assure a balanced growth and development of the Bicol Region”.

Apart from Mayon Volcano in Albay and whalesharks in Donsol, Cabalza urged protection of other important ecotourism sites in Sorsogon like Caramoan National Park, Basot and Quinalaang Islands, Tanglar Point, Libmanan Caves, Mount Isarog Natural Park, Malabungot Protected Area, Lagonoy Natural Park in Camarines Sur, and Calaguas Island in Camarines Norte.

eurowings

LOW-COST direct flights from Bangkok and Phuket to Cologne were made available by Eurowings since December 2015, with the lowest ticket prices starting from below 10,000 baht (US$279), the cheapest fare to any part of Europe from Thailand to date.

Thailand is the only Asian destination that Eurowings flies internationally. Christian Hein, senior vice president sales, Eurowings, stated that Thailand was chosen because it is a highly popular destination for Germans and other Europeans.

Kittikhun Thonprayoon, ticketing manager, Pan Air Travel, said they are expecting more travellers, both inbound and outbound, to fly on the route, and have identified budget travellers from Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Rome as potential clients.

Eurowings is operating the routes using two 310-seat Airbus A330-200s with two scheduled flights per week each from Don Mueang International Airport and Phuket International Airport.

Agents welcome plans for Phuket rail

0

AGENCIES in Thailand have welcomed plans by the government to introduce a light rail system in the holiday island of Phuket.

The planned network will stretch 60 km, starting from Phuket International Airport in the north down to Chalong Circle intersection in the south. It will be operated by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand.

“For the tourism business, it provides support for the individual traveller,” said Wilawan Chiammanasombut, secretary southern chapter, Thai Hotels Association.

She added: “It can also help alleviate the problem of overcharging taxis,” but pointed out that some travellers will still prefer to use taxis and tuk-tuks to get to their destinations.

Pankaj Sawhney, country head Thailand and IndoChina, Red Apple Travel, hopes it will lead to improved ground infrastructure countrywide as a means to facilitate greater arrivals. “Thailand needs this kind of transportation not only in Phuket but in other cities as well,” he said.

Claudio F. Kellenberger, managing director Thailand, Asian Trails, said he supports “any initiative to ease traffic congestions.” His company moves roughly 50,000 tourists a year through Phuket, sometimes taking more than two hours to do so, compared to requiring 45 minutes five years ago.

AS we wrote in our Overheard column on Monday – Hilton Worldwide to launch 13th brand – the chain has now revealed its Tru colours with the announcement of a new midscale, lifestyle hotel brand.

The first Tru by Hilton property will open by end-2016 in the US with a total of 102 hotels already signed and an additional 30 hotels in various stages of approval in cities including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Denver, Portland and Nashville.

Features of the hotel concept include The Hive, a shared-space lobby that allow guests to lounge, work, eat and play. The front desk, termed the Command Center, will have a wall that displays real-time social media feeds, and offer snacks, refreshments, alcohol and other sundries for purchase.

Rooms are equipped with platform beds, 55-inch TVs, spacious bathrooms, plentiful power points and complimentary WiFi. Mobile check-in and digital keys are also available as an added convenience on the Hilton HHonors smartphone app.

Meanwhile, complimentary breakfast comes in the form of a toppings bar where 30 sweet and savoury items are at the guests’ disposal to create their own type of bagel, donut, yogurt or oatmeal.

“More than 40 per cent of all US hotel stays are within the midscale and economy sectors and Tru by Hilton addresses a gap in the marketplace by appealing to the youthful mindset demographic, pushing the industry to marry quality and value,” commented Jim Holthouser, executive vice president, global brands, Hilton Worldwide.

“We’re breaking through the clutter of undistinguished offerings to capture the hearts of today’s travellers and anticipating the needs of tomorrow’s guests, while delivering a hotel that’s a place travellers will want to go to rather than just through.”

Israel targets Indian travellers with marketing offensive

THE Israel Ministry of Tourism has tripled its marketing budget for India to US$3 million this year on the back of record year-on-year arrival growths of 13 per cent last year.

“Israel has been gaining popularity in India after we hosted the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) convention at the beginning of last year. In order to build on this momentum, we have increased the marketing budget significantly. We expect to welcome at least 60,000 Indian tourists by the end of 2016,” said Amir Halevi, director general, Israel Ministry of Tourism.

“We will be investing a lot on digital marketing, PR and FAM trips for journalists and the travel trade. We also plan to engage Bollywood.”

Part of the budget will also be used to launch an advertising campaign across print and digital channels during India’s summer season. Both country’s tourism boards will also be rolling out joint promotions with Indian OTAs like Ezeego.com.

Hassan Madah, India director, Israel Ministry of Tourism, said: “At present, we are working on the creatives of the campaign, which will target major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

“Our focus last year was on B2B platforms as we wanted to educate the travel trade about our product offerings. However, we want to do more B2C activities in 2016.”

However, the trade feels that lack of direct connectivity remains an obstacle. “Israel needs to open up more direct flights from cities like New Delhi in order to maintain strong arrivals from India,” said Ashok Singhal, founder, Maestro Travels.
