Dearer visas for Indonesia starting today

0

INDONESIA’S immigration authority has shocked the trade with a surprise increase in the price of visas for international travellers implemented today.

According to a media statement issued by the country’s Immigration Offices, the price of a seven-day visa on arrival (VoA) has been increased from US$10 to US$15, while a 30-day VoA now costs US$35 from the initial US$25.

The increment, said the authority, is part of a new government regulation issued this year on the types and tariff of non-tax revenue as regulated by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.

Indonesian inbound operators said they were not informed of the new pricing earlier.

Wayan Sandi, operations manager of Floressa Wisata Bali said: “I only learned about the increase last night. I’m afraid guests arriving today will be taken by surprise and take it up with us for not telling them about the increment.”

Similarly, Ricky Setiawanto, director of business development at Panorama Destination, commented: “I learned about it from the media yesterday and only got a copy of the regulation document last night.

“Our packages include VoA fees, so we have no choice but to bear the balance for today’s arrivals.”

The document containing the regulation in question is available on the Indonesia Directorate General of Immigration website, signed by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on May 30 and enacted on June 3.

However, tour operators TTG Asia e-Daily spoke to did not think the price increase will significantly impact travellers’ decision to visit Indonesia.

Ricky said: “I have yet to see a reaction from our overseas partners, but I don’t think the increase will have much impact on our clients.”

On the possible effect on MICE travellers, Ketut Salam, managing director of PACTO Convex, said: “Visa fees have never been an issue in the MICE business as far as I know. The fee is a small component compared to the other MICE components and most of the time the fee is paid by the client.”

French business class-only airline takes up transatlantic challenge

0

FLEDGLING boutique airline La Compagnie this week began operations with its first service linking Paris’ Charles de Gaulle to Newark in New Jersey on all business-class flights.

The carrier offers 74 angled seats on its Boeing 757-200 and is to take delivery of a second Boeing aircraft by end-2014. Passengers can enjoy free in-flight Wi-Fi, use of Samsung tablets, Caudalie amenity kits and menus designed by Michelin-starred chef, Christophe Langree.

Peter Luethi, founder of La Compagnie, said there is room in the market for carriers that offer business travellers good value. “Those who fly business class look for service at a reasonable, affordable price. While many business class products have been upgraded, so have the prices.”

He added that La Compagnie combines cost-based pricing and a product that is comfortable, efficient and more private.

Jose Henrique Goncalves, general manager of Abako Paris, predicted the new airline would attract business travellers who fly regularly between the continents. If service levels match customer expectations, “I expect even two aircraft to be too few to meet anticipated demand”, he said.

Former business-class airlines that have failed on transatlantic routes include Eos, Maxjet and Silverjet.

M’sia reveals potential stops for KL-Singapore rail

0

MALAYSIA’S Land Public Transport Commission has announced a number of possible stops along the proposed high-speed rail line that will connect its capital Kuala Lumpur to southern neighbour Singapore in 2.5 hours.

A report by Singapore daily The Straits Times stated that the train could stop in Seremban, Ayer Keroh (Malacca), Muar, Batu Pahat and Nusajaya in Johor, close to a motorsports hub currently a work in progress.

The new rail line will be operated by express trains running between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, while transit trains will ply the distances between the cities along the way.

Total travel time between the two hubs should take a total of 2.5 hours including waiting time, transfers and immigration clearance, halving the five hours required by car and the four by plane, according to The Straits Times.

The Commission has forecast that the high-speed rail will ferry 17.9 million passengers yearly by its 10th year of operation.

Malaysian newspaper The Star quoted Commission chief executive Mohamad Nur Ismal Kamal as saying that fares for the high-speed rail will be on a par with LCC prices.

First Malaysian Business Events Week to enlighten MICE players

MALAYSIA Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) is organising the first Business Events Week (BEW) to expose local industry players to key insights, challenges and growth opportunities in the business events arena.

To be held between August 14 and 21 at the Pullman Kuala Lumpur Bangsar, the event will bear the theme Exceeding Expectations to encourage participants to see value in being innovative and to think differently in order to surpass expectations and draw more business to Malaysian shores.

Malaysia’s aim is to lure 2.9 million business event arrivals by 2020 to make up about eight per cent of the 36 million targeted tourist arrivals. Last year, the country welcomed 1.4 million business events arrivals, which translates to 5.2 per cent of total tourist arrivals to Malaysia.

MyCEB CEO, Zulkefli Sharif, said: “The purpose of BEW is to create a platform for all stakeholders of the business events industry to converge, communicate and debate issues that impact on the future growth and sustainability of the business events industry. There will be a series of seminars, workshops, dialogue sessions, expo and networking sessions that engages all levels and segments of the business events industry.”

International speakers slated to attend include Jason Fox, motivation strategy and design expert and author of The Game Changer, and Mike van der Vijver, meeting designer and advisor, trainer and coach in intercultural management.

Both experts will both speak on topics related to innovation.

Delegates will also hear from North American meeting and event planners on how they can best capture business, and listen in on dialogue sessions between the private and public sector on strategies to enable Malaysia to develop and position itself as a leading business events destination globally.

New venues bump up Patong’s meeting facilities

0

DUANGJITT Resort & Spa, located towards the south of Phuket’s Patong Beach, has rolled out a new convention facility within its 14.6ha premises to raise its appeal as a MICE venue.

“Although we have over 500 rooms, our meeting facilities could only accommodate 100-plus pax previously, hence the management decided to add a new convention hall to the resort with an investment of some 300 million baht (US$9.3 million),” said Duangjitt Resort & Spa’s assistant director of sales, Purimpratch Sukbuayai.

Comprised of three main buildings designed in traditional Thai architectural style, Duangchanok Convention Hall features the 986m2 high-ceilinged Duangchanok Ballroom that can comfortably accommodate 1,200 pax and be divided into three smaller spaces; the 309m2 Duangrada Reception Hall that can host around 300 pax; the Banquet Hall consisting of four breakout rooms (Duangkamol, Duangthip, Duangmanee and Duangkaew) varying between 100m2 and 200m2, plus the 232m2 open-air Duangdao Hall; and three VIP rooms with private restrooms.

“Duangchanok Convention Hall is able to accommodate up to 2,000 pax, making it the biggest MICE venue on Patong Beach,” added Purimpratch. “Construction has already been completed but the facility is still undergoing fine-tuning of its interior systems, with an official opening planned for later this year.”

Soft-opened in late-2013, Duangchanok Convention Hall hosted the 6th Andaman Travel Trade Show in November 2013 as its first event, and has received meeting requests for groups varying between 300 and 400 pax from neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Singapore, Purimpratch shared.

Upcoming groups include a 600-pax group from Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand Group and two 600-pax groups from India in September this year.

Less than 1km away, the newly opened Grand Mercure Phuket Patong also offers a 290m2 Grand M Ballroom accommodating up to 200 guests for sit-down dinners and 300 guests for standing cocktails, plus two meeting rooms of 95m2 and 60m2 each, according to the resort’s assistant director of sales, Nuschanart Ariyakhachorn. The 314-room property will celebrate its grand opening later this month.

The retro-inspired, industrial-designed area is outfitted with meeting rooms, a boardroom, an auditorium, a terrace and a media hub along with a dedicated breakout zone.

Apart from the additional 200 rooms and suites each with their own private balconies, the new building will feature a top-floor Executive Club with panoramic views of Pattaya Bay, swimming pools, a kids’ club and a restaurant.

“There continues to be a healthy demand for MICE business into Pattaya, with many telling us they are looking for something different,” Kate Gerits, general manager at Holiday Inn Pattaya.
