Trade gets online training on Chic Outlet Shopping Villages

0

VALUE Retail has introduced an online travel training programme for MICE operators and consultants to discover the offerings of its 11 Chic Outlet Shopping Villages across Europe and China in a streamlined and efficient manner.

The programme aims to educate travel partners on how to book and sell shopping packages to the villages, the range of services and amenities available at each village, and business tourism opportunities. It comprises four modules and is offered in 10 languages.

Meanwhile, Chic Outlet Shopping’s latest retail outlet, Shanghai Village, is scheduled to open end-2015 in Pudong District as neighbour to Shanghai Disneyland Resort. This will be the second retail outlet in China, after Suzhou Village that opened in last April.

Thibault Ruffat, head of European tourism – global marketing, said Shanghai Village will target mainly locals and visitors from Asia-Pacific.

Similar to the nine villages in Europe, MICE planners and delegates to Shanghai Village can expect on-site experts who will create programmes based on their individual objectives.

Event organisers are also entitled to exclusive hire of the village, use of VIP facilities, extensive bespoke branding opportunities, valet parking on arrival, private boutique viewings and private dining in VIP suites or restaurants.

New convention centre shifts Shanghai’s MICE epicentre towards Hongqiao

0

THE National Exhibition and Convention Centre, Shanghai (NECC), which commenced trial operation last October and completed its second-phase construction officially this January, has ramped up the MICE prospects of Hongqiao district where it is located.

Equivalent to thrice the size of Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) in Pudong district, NECC stands as the largest single-block building as well as integrated exhibition complex worldwide, offering 400,000m2 of indoor exhibition space and 100,000m2 outdoors.

The organising committee of the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show announced that the exhibition will convene for the first time at NECC rather than SNIEC, signifying the shift of Shanghai’s MICE hub from Pudong to Hongqiao district.

Shanghai Exhibition vice president, Gao Wenwei, remarked that NECC symbolises the dawn of a new era for Shanghai’s exhibition industry, as the new complex marks the largest exhibition venue globally while also adding to the city’s showcase of iconic architecture.

One of the first exhibitions NECC hosted during its trial operation was the four-day China International Auto Parts Expo, which drew 1500 exhibitors and 130,000 visitors.

Despite teething problems during its four-month trial operation, NECC attracted renowned exhibitions from China and abroad, including Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics, China International Fashion Fair, Yarn Expo, and Italian textiles and accessories exhibition Milano Unica.

Works are in progress for NECC’s various peripheral services. Many hoteliers in Hongqiao look forward to the venue’s completion as this would greatly boost demand for commercial services, offices, hotels and residential accommodation.

Brand USA kicks off training programme for Malaysian trade

0

THE US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Brand USA today launched the Visit USA Malaysia programme to provide the Malaysian trade and travellers support and resources for travel to the US.

The programme is a collaboration between the US Embassy’s commercial and consular sections, and includes in-person training sessions for Malaysian travel agencies.

Agencies will learn about best practices to help travellers prepare US visa applications, qualify for Brand USA support and receive ongoing information from the embassy and Brand USA, among other benefits.

The programme coincides with the annual consumer, MATTA Fair, which starts tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur and ends on March 15.

Reene Ho-Phang, managing director, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Brand USA, said: “The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Brand USA will host a booth for the first time at the fair and it will also be the first time Brand USA is entering the Malaysian market.”

Besides promoting travel and tourism in the US, participation at the MATTA Fair is also to dispel misperceptions surrounding the difficulties of getting a US visa and the lengthy period of visa processing.

Edgard D Kagan, deputy chief of mission, US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, explained: “The average approval rate of visa applications from Malaysia is 95 per cent and the visa processing period is one working day.”

Jessica E Norris, consul at the US Embassy in Malaysia, said applicants not adequately prepared for the interview and not furnishing supporting documents are the main reasons for their applications getting rejected.

Macau adds four more walking tour routes

0

FOLLOWING last year’s launch of four Step Out, Experience Macau’s Communities walking tour routes, the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) will roll out four more itineraries this year.

After gathering feedback from visitors and local residents, the original four routes have also been enhanced and renamed in Phase 2, announced Charles Leong from MGTO’s representative office in Singapore at a recent trade event.

The walking tours take visitors to various attractions in the Macau Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. The eight routes are Footsteps into the Historic Centre, An Experiment of Creativity, Crossroads of China and Portugal, A Legacy of Arts and Culture, Enchanting Stories of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, The Marriage of East and West in St Anthony’s Parish, Bygone Days of Taipa Village, and Nostalgia in Coloane.

In 2014, Singapore was among Macau’s top 10 source markets, growing 3.6 per cent and contributing 196,491 visitors.

Alan Ong, general manager (tour division) of New Shan Travel Service in Singapore, said: “Singaporeans generally go for free-and-easy programmes with just the basics including transfers and a hop-on, hop-off city tour.

“Nevertheless, it’s helpful to know about the walking tours, which we can recommend to our customers when they ask what else they can do apart from visiting the casinos.”

Leong said a Macau sales mission is being organised in April for the Macau and Singapore trade.

Macau also introduced the Quality Tourism Services Accreditation Scheme last year, having qualified 86 catering businesses for the Star Merchant Award. More businesses are expected to join the list this year.

Maldives steps up promotions ahead of ITB Berlin 2016

THE Maldives is investing US$4.5 million this year in promotions, including roadshows and participation at 19 overseas trade fairs.

The country is targetting 1.9 million visitors this year, up eight per cent from 2014. It is pinning hopes of greater numbers on 2016, which has been designated Visit Maldives Year, and will also see the country assume the role of partner host for ITB Berlin 2016.

The government expects to spend around 1.5 million euros (US$1.6 million) on ITB Berlin 2016 events.

Between January and August this year, roadshows have been scheduled in more than 10 countries and 24 cities, while a bigger programme connected to celebrating VMY 2016 will be released mid-2015, said Mohamed Adam, deputy managing director, Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC).

MMPRC will also lead industry delegations to trade fairs in Istanbul, Spain, Zürich, Berlin, Prague, Moscow, Azerbaijan, Japan, Dubai, Delhi, Florida, France, Rio de Janeiro, Italy, Singapore and London.

Abdulla Ghiyas, president of the Maldivian Association for Travel Agents and Tour Operators, is upbeat. “The government has said it will come up with a plan in June on the promotions leading up to ITB Berlin’s 2016 edition. I believe we can attract many more Germans,” he said.

Arrivals from Germany rose marginally 5.1 per cent to 98,338 last year.

Officials said attention is also being placed on boosting arrivals from Brazil, Russia, India and China.
