Royal Brunei Airlines lures Singaporeans with new aircraft

0

ROYAL Brunei Airlines (RBA) is targeting to court more Singaporeans into Brunei with the deployment of two new Airbus A320 aircraft on the Singapore-Brunei route from September.

The new aircraft will feature rebranded interiors and higher passenger comfort levels, and will be utilised for one of the existing 14 flights between Singapore and Brunei each week, according to Dermot Mannion, RBA’s deputy chairman.

At the launch of the newly refurbished RBA office in Singapore, Mannion said more details about the aircraft will be unveiled later this year.

He said: “We are looking at providing our passengers the latest in-flight entertainment and they are going to be very happy to see what we have to offer.”

Among the 14 flights, two of them have been operated by the B787 dreamliners on Fridays and and Sundays since September 2013, and Mannion said this service has been “very well received” and will hence continue.

He shared that the current passenger load factor on the Singapore-Brunei route is over 70 per cent, with 40 per cent comprising Singaporeans and the rest from Brunei.

Separately, RBA last year also placed order with Airbus for seven A320neo aircraft and three options, in line with its latest phase of fleet modernisation. It will start taking delivery of the two-class premium layout A320 in 2018. When delivered, the aircraft will be deployed from capital Bandar Seri Begawan on the carrier’s Asian network.

Outside of Asia, the Bruneian flag carrier also operates flights to Melbourne, London and Dubai. Mannion said: “Right now our main focus is to build up traffic on our existing routes and continue developing traffic from our longhaul routes from these points.”

New convention centre shifts Shanghai’s MICE epicentre towards Hongqiao

0

THE National Exhibition and Convention Centre, Shanghai (NECC), which commenced trial operation last October and completed its second-phase construction officially this January, has ramped up the MICE prospects of Hongqiao district where it is located.

Equivalent to thrice the size of Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) in Pudong district, NECC stands as the largest single-block building as well as integrated exhibition complex worldwide, offering 400,000m2 of indoor exhibition space and 100,000m2 outdoors.

The organising committee of the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show announced that the exhibition will convene for the first time at NECC rather than SNIEC, signifying the shift of Shanghai’s MICE hub from Pudong to Hongqiao district.

Shanghai Exhibition vice president, Gao Wenwei, remarked that NECC symbolises the dawn of a new era for Shanghai’s exhibition industry, as the new complex marks the largest exhibition venue globally while also adding to the city’s showcase of iconic architecture.

One of the first exhibitions NECC hosted during its trial operation was the four-day China International Auto Parts Expo, which drew 1500 exhibitors and 130,000 visitors.

Despite teething problems during its four-month trial operation, NECC attracted renowned exhibitions from China and abroad, including Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics, China International Fashion Fair, Yarn Expo, and Italian textiles and accessories exhibition Milano Unica.

Works are in progress for NECC’s various peripheral services. Many hoteliers in Hongqiao look forward to the venue’s completion as this would greatly boost demand for commercial services, offices, hotels and residential accommodation.

Brand USA kicks off training programme for Malaysian trade

0

THE US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Brand USA today launched the Visit USA Malaysia programme to provide the Malaysian trade and travellers support and resources for travel to the US.

The programme is a collaboration between the US Embassy’s commercial and consular sections, and includes in-person training sessions for Malaysian travel agencies.

Agencies will learn about best practices to help travellers prepare US visa applications, qualify for Brand USA support and receive ongoing information from the embassy and Brand USA, among other benefits.

The programme coincides with the annual consumer, MATTA Fair, which starts tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur and ends on March 15.

Reene Ho-Phang, managing director, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Brand USA, said: “The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Brand USA will host a booth for the first time at the fair and it will also be the first time Brand USA is entering the Malaysian market.”

Besides promoting travel and tourism in the US, participation at the MATTA Fair is also to dispel misperceptions surrounding the difficulties of getting a US visa and the lengthy period of visa processing.

Edgard D Kagan, deputy chief of mission, US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, explained: “The average approval rate of visa applications from Malaysia is 95 per cent and the visa processing period is one working day.”

Jessica E Norris, consul at the US Embassy in Malaysia, said applicants not adequately prepared for the interview and not furnishing supporting documents are the main reasons for their applications getting rejected.
