Visitors kept at bay

Greater access to Sai Kung is needed for agents to better promote this hidden gem in Hong Kong.

It appears the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, despite being known in the scientific circles since 2009, will remain one of the city’s best kept secrets and lay in wait off the beaten track.

A ferry and a bus service were recently made available to the park − located in the Sai Kung East Country Park in the East and North East New Territories − but at present they operate only on Sundays and public holidays, placing limits on opportunities for more to discover the park.

Since starting operations in January, the 160-seat Kaito Ferry Service has been plying from Ma Liu Shui in Shatin to Lai Chi Wo, a manageable walk to the geopark. The ferry leaves Ma Liu Shui at 09.00 and returns from Lai Chi Wo at 15.30.

The 26-seat shuttle bus tour service was launched by the Sai Kung District Community Centre in May 2016, taking just 40 minutes to travel from its terminus in Sai Kung Town to the East Dam of High Island Geo-area.

Despite receiving “only a handful of enquiries” about the geopark, Cary Chiu, general manager of PC Tours and Travel, is certain the interest will grow.

“The new services are better than nothing, (but) what worries me is the availability of seats. If the bus is packed it would be a long wait for the next departure. If there isn’t regular public transport, travellers may not consider going.”

Chiu played down the suggestion that the present situation would encourage FITs to bypass agents to visit the park on their own.

“Clients may approach us for a tour guide to accompany them and we can even arrange transport from downtown to Sai Kung… There is still a way for agents to survive,” he emphasised.

ATI Travel managing director, Richard Woss, commented: “I will combine (the geopark attraction) with our hiking tours to enhance the itinerary. Frankly, such nature themed tours (interest) a very small market but the (improved) access is better than nothing.”

Meanwhile, developments are underway in the Sai Kung area, with the Volcano Discovery Centre opening in Sai Kung Waterfront Park in 2014, and the High Island Geo-trail enhanced with visitor facilities including a boardwalk and information panels.

Making refunds a breeze

jul-27-goibibo2

WHO Ashish Kashyap is the CEO and founder of Ibibo Group, which owns several online travel portals such as Goibibo.com, a hotel and air aggregator; redBus.in, an online bus ticketing platform; and ibibo Ryde, a car and cab sharing app.

Today, more than three million unique users transact in Ibibo’s websites every month, making it one of the largest travel companies in India. In a recent report by Morgan Stanley, Goibibo.com is India’s top OTA in terms of hotel booking volume.

For the October-December 2015 period, Goibibo grew its hotel bookings by 400 per cent year-on-year with roomnights crossing 1.6 million. Some 71 per cent of hotel bookings on Goibibo take place on its mobile app.

Prior to launching Ibibo Group in 2007, Kashyap was the country head of Google India, where he established the domestic business operations from ground up, and had also founded an e-commerce business at Indiatimes.com.

WHAT In March 2016, Goibibo.com launched GoTime Guarantee, promising to deliver the fastest refunds in the country. The site guarantees refunds will be processed within two hours from the time a customer cancels his/her travel bookings with the portal. Goibibo also shares the exact time − in minutes and seconds − taken to process the refund with the customer.

If the company fails to meet the two-hour guarantee, the platform promises to credit Rs100 (US$1.48) into the customer’s GoCash wallet for every hour of delay. GoCash is a virtual wallet on the portal which can be used to book travel services such as hotels and flights.

WHY According to Goibibo, more than 15 per cent of travellers make amendments to their trips, bringing about the need for refunds.

“We often see that refund is a big problem in India no matter the segment. By guaranteeing a specific time period to process the refund, we get more credibility and customers who can rely on Goibibo.com,” says Kashyap.

During the first-week launch of GoTime Guarantee, Goibibo processed 99 per cent of applicable cases in 30 minutes.

TARGET Kashyap said that GoTime Guarantee is an industry first introduced after the company conducted research to understand the user psyche. Through this service, the OTA hopes to increase trust and reliability among its users and eventually offer this ‘time guarantees’ to customers for all processes.

Preferred joins up with UnionPay in pursuit of China market

unionpay

PREFERRED Hotels & Resorts yesterday entered into a global partnership effective through 2019 with UnionPay International as part of the hospitality group’s ongoing efforts to further penetrate the Chinese market.

With a growing number of Chinese travellers “(making) their purchasing decisions based solely on where they can use their UnionPay cards”, Preferred had spent six months ensuring all its member hotels were equipped to accept the payment method.

As part of the agreement, UnionPay will provide Preferred with exposure through promotional campaigns such as banner advertising on UnionPayIntl.com and statement inserts at affiliate banks across China, which will rotate on a quarterly basis; and educate cardholders on the offerings at Preferred properties.

Kicking off the partnership, Preferred will participate in UnionPay International’s ongoing Enjoy the World Your Way consumer promotion, extending cardholders a special discount of up to 15 per cent at 125 participating properties located across several of the top 50 most popular international destinations for Chinese travellers, from Lake Como, Italy, to Los Angeles, California.

Among other recent efforts by Preferred targeting Chinese travellers are the launch of a website in simplified Chinese (www.preferredhotels.cn); dynamic social media campaigns on Sina Weibo and WeChat; a partnership with Air China; and booking connectivity with key OTAs and China’s GDS.

This year, the company also hired new associates based across Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou to handle public relations, social media, travel trade relations, and sales responsibilities, and signed three new member hotels in China – Longemont Shanghai, Longemont Hotel Chengdu and Wanda Reign Chengdu Hotel.

Airlines need to future-proof themselves with reliable Wi-Fi

CONSISTENT, speedy inflight internet connection will become increasingly important for airlines as consumers become ever more dependent on the service, according to a recent study conducted by conglomerate Honeywell.

Nearly three out of four polled in the study indicated that having a connection in the air is so crucial that they are willing to switch airlines in order to get a more reliable service. Roughly 21 per cent have already abandoned their preferred airline for an option with better in-flight Wi-Fi, up from 17 per cent in 2014.

The research stated that passengers want to stay connected so that they can remain in contact with their friends and family, get work done, or be entertained.

“The biggest challenge airlines face in providing quality Wi-Fi coverage is adopting a service that is reliable and global. What makes ‘the best’ in-flight connectivity is a combination of speed and reliability, no matter where passengers travel to,” said Brian Davis, vice president, Airlines, Asia-Pacific at Honeywell Aerospace.

He explained that airlines have a choice of air-to-ground, ku-band satellite and ka-band satellite connectivity options, each with their own advantages and disadvantages, but that ka-band global providers such as GX Aviation currently offers one of the best options in the market.

Within Asia-Pacific, Singapore Airlines has chosen the service provider for its B777-300ER and A380-800s aircraft while Vietnam Airlines is utilising it aboard its A350 fleet. Air China is in the midst of offering it on their A330 flights.

“Consumers are (fed up with) dealing with slow, inconsistent connections and global coverage that is made up of a patchwork of various networks rather than getting access to one truly consistent service,” he added.

“We expect airlines (in the Asia-Pacific region) to continue to use in-flight Wi-Fi as a way to appeal to the region’s internet-hungry travellers.”

India looks to extend e-visa scheme to 36 more countries

THE Indian government is looking to extend e-visa facilities to citizens of 36 more countries including Italy, Iran, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Maldives, Morocco, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Morocco.

India’s ministry of tourism has sent a proposal to the ministry of home affairs and it is likely to be cleared before the beginning of the October inbound season, said an informed source.

Launched in November 2014, the e-visa scheme is at present available for citizens of 150 countries.

“(This) is a definite boost for the tourism industry as it makes travelling to India more convenient, less time consuming and hassle free. It is another positive move from the government that is clearly seeking to make tourism one of the key drivers of economic growth in the country,” said Sharat Dhall, president, Yatra.com.

However, some tour operators said that there is a need to improve the scheme first before extending it to more countries.

Subhash Goyal, chairman, STIC Travel Group, said: “There is a need to allow multiple entry on e-visas so that tourists looking to visit neighbouring countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka can come back to India.”

A total of 36,982 tourists arrived in June using e-visas compared to 15,557 in June the previous year, a growth of 137 per cent.

CAMBODIA’s increasing air connectivity is the key driver accounting for the South-east Asian nation’s continued tourism growth, according to local tour operators.

The latest figures from Cambodia Airports (CA) show a five per cent year-on-year increase in international visitors landing at the country’s three international airports between January and June with more than 3.4 million passing through Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh airports.

Phnom Penh International Airport saw the largest increase of 10 per cent.

“Cambodia is increasingly connected with the rest of the world with the country’s three international airports opening the country up to the growing middle-class of neighbouring Asian countries as well as to the rest of the world,” said Jo Crisp, general manager of Peak Cambodia DMC.

This year has seen a raft of direct flights launched, including between Sihanoukville and China, and Sihanoukville and Vietnam.

Amy McLoughlin, co-founder of Ayana Journeys, said: “Increased accessibility to the country that is both affordable and more direct is encouraging visitors tight on time seeking to get to the heart of the destination as quickly as possible.”

In addition to more connections, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh airports recently underwent a US$100 million upgrading programme to expand terminals and double capacity to five million passengers each.

The soft opening will see Garuda Indonesia operating at the new terminal, followed by SkyTeam member airlines towards end-2016. The terminal will be in full operation by March 2017.

Sponsorship among main concerns of associations: MCI Group

SHARING preliminary results from an ongoing study by MCI Group on how associations in Europe, Latin America and Asia are performing, Oscar Cerezales, COO-Asia Pacific noted that sponsorship matters are among the top concerns.

Some 80 per cent of respondents say sponsorship is one of the top three challenges faced by their associations, and of these, 69 per cent has named this issue as the top concern.

Breaking down the numbers further, Cerezales revealed that 70 per cent of Asian associations regard sponsorship as the top concern, while 83 per cent and 56 per cent of those in Latin America and Europe, respectively, felt the same way.

“The good news is, sponsorship is here to stay and growth is amazing for all media except the Internet and mobile,” Cerezales told the audience at the PCMA Meetings Forum Singapore.

“What is changing is the way sponsor prospects regard sponsorship activities. They have a lot of options and are choosing wisely. Remember, you are not the only association around, and your conference is not the only one they can support,” he added.

Cerezales offered several tips on what associations can do to get more sponsorship. They include approaching sponsor prospects a year ahead of the event, offering a customised sponsorship package that appeals to the prospect’s business interest, using data as a key in sales pitches, providing a year-round sponsorship opportunity, and leveraging multiple channels or platforms, among other things.

The study is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and results will help the MCI Group to more accurately access the health of its client associations as well as the identification and resolution of areas of weaknesses.
