Hong Kong boosts Muslim-friendly tourism with halal certifications and new initiatives

0

The Hong Kong tourism trade is gearing up to attract more Muslim travellers by enhancing tourism-support facilities. Since the beginning of 2024, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has adopted a diversified approach to position Hong Kong as a Muslim-friendly destination.

Currently, 53 hotels, five attractions, and MICE venues have successfully received accreditation from the halal travel promotion company, CrescentRating. Additionally, more than 140 restaurants have been halal-certified.

Earlier this month, HKTB organised a familiarisation trip for over 20 Muslim travel trade representatives from South-east Asian visitor source markets. The representatives praised the progress made in Muslim tourism in Hong Kong, noting that it has reached a new level, which will help facilitate the organisation of future tours to the city.

Ramadan, which lasts for about a month, has already begun, and the Mira Hong Kong, recently certified with five crescents by CrescentRating, has hosted its first-ever Ramadan Iftar Dinner Celebration at its Penthouse Ballroom to promote a deeper understanding of the festive culture. The event, organised in collaboration with Miramar Travel and the Consulate General of Türkiye in Hong Kong, attracted nearly 200 guests, including members of the local Muslim community, diplomats from the Middle East and Asia, local government officials from the tourism sector, and media representatives.

To accommodate Muslim guests, the Mira Hong Kong and its sister hotel Mira Moon feature Qibla direction pointers, and provide Quran and prayer rugs upon request. Portable bidet sprayers are also available to ensure comfort and hygiene in accordance with Muslim customs. The hotels offer halal dining options, including Cantonese fine dining at Michelin-recommended Cuisine Cuisine at The Mira, an Arabic-speaking guest ambassador, and a 24/7 in-room dining menu in Arabic featuring both Asian and Western favourites. Meanwhile, Mira Moon is equipped with essential Muslim-friendly amenities and offers a halal breakfast set for international travellers.

Alexander Wassermann, head of hotels and serviced apartments at Miramar Group, said: “All of our employees have received extensive training on halal food and halal travel practices implemented at our hotels. Our team looks forward to welcoming more Muslim guests from around the world, and we aim to become the preferred Chinese dining destination in Hong Kong for the local Muslim community.”

Special Ramadan buffets to accommodate the dietary needs and arrangements of Muslim travellers are also available at Kowloon Shangri-La and Dorsett Tsuen Wan Hong Kong.

Doris Lam, general manager of Momentous Asia Travel and Events, noted that while more hotels are offering halal meals, these are often available only for larger groups. Smaller groups, she explained, may need to seek restaurants outside the hotels.

She mentioned that most of the other halal restaurants in the city primarily serve Indian or Middle Eastern cuisine. While they offer halal food, she remarked that most visitors coming to Hong Kong would prefer to try Chinese cuisine. However, she pointed out that there are very few restaurants offering halal Chinese meals.

“We also hope to see more facilities for prayer at attractions and shopping malls,” Lam added.

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) has launched the Visit Maldives Hackathon, which is now open for registration. The event is aimed at both local and international participants aged 18 and above who are interested in combining technology and sustainability in the tourism industry.

The Visit Maldives Hackathon is a 48-hour long event designed to address the key challenges in the Maldivian tourism industry through innovative, technology-driven solutions. It lines up with Visit Maldives’ commitment to enhance sustainable tourism while amplifying technologies for positive traveller experiences and operational efficiency.

Information sessions for participants will be held on March 13, March 19, and April 7, and participants are then to submit their proposals by April 11. Proposal evaluations will take place the day after the submission deadline, and the proposals selected for the Hackathon will be announced on April 13. The event itself will be held from April 18 to 20.

While addressing the audience during the official launching ceremony, minister of tourism and environment Thoriq Ibrahim stated that the ideas developed at the hackathon “will not remain inside these walls”.

“The innovations you create can shape the way we welcome guests, the way we manage our industry, the way we preserve our natural environment while enhancing visitor experiences,” he said.

MMPRC’s CEO and managing director Ibrahim Shiuree added: “I am confident that with the bright ideas generated while working together, we can build a  stronger and more diverse tourism sector in the Maldives. We are hopeful that it will be a strong positive step towards the growth of tech-driven solutions for tourism-related challenges.

“MMPRC has a range of constructive activities in the pipeline to promote Maldives for the rest of the year 2025, and we are committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to support the Maldives tourism industry. We will continue facilitating innovation, public-private collaboration, and sustainable growth of Maldives tourism through global promotion and innovative events such as these.”

Robinsons Hotels targets India for its expansion

0

Robinsons Hotels and Resorts (RHR) affirms its commitment to supporting the Philippine Department of Tourism in revitalising the Indian source market following the recent implementation of e-visa for Indian nationals and the direct flights between the two countries expected this year.

RHR’s senior vice president and business unit general manager, Barun Jolly, will assist with the initial groundwork by travelling to Delhi on March 25 to meet with travel agents, top MICE organisers, luxury wedding planners, and members of the media.

Jolly: the potential of the Indian market is huge

“The potential of the Indian market is huge. When it grows, it will grow exponentially. But for it to grow, we have to make sure the gateway into the two countries is easy and the ease of arrival is dependent on two key drivers – the ease of getting a visa and the launch of the direct flight,” he told TTG Asia.

While the e-visa for Indian nationals is already available in the Philippines, Jolly highlighted that the processing time remains lengthy, and the document requirements are more extensive compared to Asian competitors, where the only requirements for a visa application are a passport and a copy of the passport.

In comparison, Thailand and Malaysia have no visa requirements, while Indonesia offers a visa on arrival that Indian tourists can apply for online in just minutes. Vietnam’s e-visa, on the other hand, takes only two to three minutes to complete and is delivered online within a few days.

Although not officially confirmed, it is expected that a few weekly flights will be introduced between Delhi and Manila later this year, in contrast to Vietnam’s current schedule of over 35 weekly flights connecting to India, Thailand’s numerous flights from various tourist gateways, and Indonesia’s direct flights from Bali and Jakarta.

Once these two factors are in place, Jolly remarked that inbound tourism from India will start to increase, and “the numbers will grow by word of mouth” as the Philippines has many strengths – an abundance of tourist attractions, an English-speaking population, white beaches, and the warm, welcoming hospitality of Filipinos, among others.

Jolly also highlighted the country’s expanding range of hotels, from budget options to luxurious five-star establishments, catering to all types of tourists. He also pointed out the availability of Muslim-friendly accommodations and attractions, as well as halal and vegetarian cuisine, which should help attract emerging source markets such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Middle East.

He said it could be a boon for Indian weddings, where the per capita spend is US$250 per guest, excluding hotel rooms. This brings the total spend to around US$500 per guest for weddings, which typically involve a large number of guests flying in.

However, he added that marketing promotions should extend beyond Delhi and Mumbai, as other cities, such as Ahmedabad, also have significant tourism spending.

Jolly revealed that RHR is looking to finalise a GSA agreement in India within the next few months: “It is a strong market, and with the scale that we have, we really want to be represented in markets like (South) Korea and India.”

RHR operates 30 hotels, ranging from home-grown brands such as Go, Fili, and Grand Summit to international brands like Westin and Dusit Thani Mactan.

Embark on an adventure at Singapore’s Rainforest Wild Asia

Singapore’s fifth wildlife park, Rainforest Wild Asia, has officially opened on March 12. The 13-hectare park is Asia’s first adventure-based zoological park that recreates the experience of a rainforest trek with free roaming animals.

Officiating the launch was Grace Fu, minister for sustainability and the environment, and minister-in-charge of trade relations.

Fu hailed the park’s opening as “an exciting new chapter in Singapore tourism”, adding that “this landmark attraction invites visitors of diverse needs to see, to feel, and to experience the rainforest in ways never before possible”.

Visitors can explore the park on elevated boardwalks that are accessible for those with strollers and the elderly, or embark on more adventurous forest trails that take them across boulders, log bridges, and streams. There are also adventure touchpoints around the park, such as the Langur Walking Net and Tiger Bridge, which offer views of the rainforest.

Mandai Wildlife Group’s group CEO Mike Barclay said: “The multi-layered experience encourages park-goers to explore a South-east Asian rainforest up in the tree canopy, on the forest floor and below the ground in a network of cave chambers. Visitors can choose between universally designed walkways, more challenging forest treks, or an array of guided adventures.”

Rainforest Wild Asia is home to 36 animal species, including the François’ langur, one of the world’s rarest monkeys, and the Philippine spotted deer, a threatened species found in the wild on the Visayan Islands of the Philippines. The park recently welcomed its first birth of a Philippine spotted deer.

Guests can also participate in paid activities such as the Canopy Jump, a free-fall jump from a 13m or 20m high platform, bounce nets at the AIA Vitality Bounce, abseiling down a cave, and hiking along a via ferrata route.

Rainforest Wild Asia is expected to welcome about 900,000 guests in its first year of operations.

At Small Chundangji Pond, the lower side of the pond, the Water’s Breath media art show creates an interplay of light and water, guiding visitors through the joys and sorrows of the palace. The seasonal shows are available from April 15 to May 18 in spring and from September 10 to November 8 in autumn.

India’s concert boom drives hotel bookings and hospitality growth

0

India’s growing reputation as a hub for international live events is providing a significant boost to the country’s hospitality sector. With globally renowned artists like Coldplay, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa performing across major cities, hotels are witnessing a surge in bookings and occupancy rates.

“Cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune, etc, which regularly host large-scale concerts, have shown upward trends in hotel bookings, with a marked spike in demand for rooms around event dates. This increase is often accompanied by longer-than-usual stays, as concertgoers frequently extend their trips to explore the city or attend pre and post event activities,” said Suhail Kannampilly, managing director, The Fern Hotels & Resorts.

India’s growing live event scene is boosting hotel bookings, offering an opportunity for the hospitality sector to enhance guest experiences

Shyam Kumar, general manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Bengaluru Whitefield, noted a 20 to 25 per cent increase in occupancy rates during major concerts. “Beyond boosting occupancy, such concerts strengthen the city’s position as a premier entertainment and cultural destination, attracting a diverse mix of leisure and business travellers,” he said.

These events are also allowing hotels to engage directly with a diverse demographic, including high-net-worth individuals, international tourists and music enthusiasts.

“There is a significant opportunity to enhance guest experiences by offering tailored packages, VIP services, and concert-related amenities, which not only elevate our brand positioning but also increase guest satisfaction. By offering exclusive concert-related packages, early check-ins, late check-outs, or shuttle services to and from the venue, we cater to the specific needs of concertgoers, ensuring that their stay is both convenient and memorable,” added Kannampilly.

Tony Marshall, vice president and managing director for Asia-Pacific at Agilysys, pointed out the challenges and opportunities in managing high guest volumes during live events.

“With India rapidly becoming a hotspot for international concerts, the hospitality sector has a golden opportunity to capitalise on increased demand. Earlier this year, Mumbai saw a massive surge in hotel prices ahead of the Coldplay concert. As live events continue to bring thousands of fans to major cities, hotels must go beyond simply accommodating guests – they must justify premium pricing by delivering exceptional, memorable experiences,” he noted.

Marshall suggested that Indian hotels elevate the guest experience by adding personalised touches, such as providing concert-themed tokens and custom merchandise at check-in, or creating in-room amenities like playlists inspired by the performing artists.

Singapore surges in popularity with Lady Gaga’s performance

Agoda has observed a 358 per cent increase in accommodation searches for Singapore following the announcement of exclusive Lady Gaga concerts scheduled for May 18, 19, 21, and 24 this year. Fans from across the region are eager to “just dance”, with searches on Agoda’s platform multiplying compared to the previous two weeks.

The announcement of Lady Gaga’s concerts has sparked a wave of interest, particularly from Taiwan, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Notably, Taiwan emerged as the top market searching for Singapore on March 10, despite not being in the top five origin ranks in the two weeks prior to the announcement.

Singapore is in the spotlight with Lady Gaga set to perform this May

The surge in search activity highlights Singapore’s appeal as a top destination for major events and underscores Agoda’s role in connecting travellers with a wide range of travel options.

Matteo Frigerio, chief marketing officer at Agoda, shared: “It’s no bad romance – big events inspire travel, and Lady Gaga’s upcoming concert series in Singapore is proof of that.”

AirAsia to move domestic operations to KLIA T2

0

AirAsia will relocate its domestic services from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA T2), effective April 7.

With passenger volumes between Kuala Lumpur and key destinations like Kota Kinabalu and Kuching increasing by 16 per cent year-on-year, shifting operations to KLIA T2 will help AirAsia better accommodate the rising traffic.

Since resuming operations from Subang in August last year, the airline has closely analysed passenger trends and operational needs. While Subang has been convenient for city-bound travellers, its redevelopment to support future growth will take time. Therefore, AirAsia will move all operations to KLIA T2 to improve efficiency and enhance the guest experience.

AirAsia Malaysia CEO Fareh Mazputra stated that to ensure a seamless transition, operations will continue at Subang Airport during the high-demand Hari Raya week.

“This allows the majority of guests travelling for the holidays to benefit from its convenience before the shift. We have also put in place comprehensive Service Recovery Options, including complimentary flight changes, credit accounts, or full refunds, to minimise any inconvenience,” he said.

“KLIA T2 has been instrumental in strengthening Kuala Lumpur’s position as a leading regional mega hub, and we are proud to reinforce our presence there as the dominant carrier.”
